She was born in Madison County, Alabama on August 6, 1925, to Myers and Clara Gatlin, where she grew up picking cotton on the family farm. After a move to middle Tennessee, she married Guy Wilson Sloan in April 1942, which began their 65-year life together.
Lovingly known as Mom, Ma, Little Ma, and Miss Georgia, she lived a long and full life as a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, daughter-in-law, and friend. She enjoyed her life on 'the Ridge' surrounded by family and treasured, above all, cooking huge Sunday family dinners, even into her 90s. She prayed that her legacy of love for and service to family would be remembered by her grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Guy Wilson Sloan, sister Hazel Gregory, and son-in-law Jimmy Shepherd. She is survived by brother James Daniel (Delma) Gatlin; daughters Janice (Doug) Baxter, and Teresa Shepherd; grandchildren Resa (Mark) Fleming, Kara Mae (Tyrell) Jackson, Jill (Josh) Davis, and Dustin (Jessica) Shepherd; great-grandchildren Dagen Fleming, Maely and Paelyn Jackson, Averie Blankenship, Ellie Sloan Shepherd; and step great-grandchildren Alexis Fleming and Zach (Maddey) Jackson.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers from Alive hospice. "Miss Georgia" was a member of, and attended, Forest Grove United Methodist Church.
There will be no visitation prior to the celebration of life, which will be held Monday, October 26 at 2pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Goodlettsville, with burial immediately following in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Attendees are asked to wear masks and social distance. Those wishing to honor her life may make donations in her name to Forest Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund, 7982 Whites Creek Pike, Joelton, Tennessee 37080.
