Marie Terese Hymel Gonzales, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on August 1, 2024. Born on January 18, 1928, in St. James, La. Marie lived a life filled with love, adventure, wisdom, and grace. She lived with her husband and children in military bases in places such as Panama and Alaska before returning to Louisiana and settling in St. Amant, LA where she lived for over 65 years. Marie was a shining example of kindness and strength. Her unwavering dedication to her family and her generous spirit left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She was known for her warm smile, strong singing voice, and her ability to make each person feel special and valued. As a woman of great Christian faith, she was an active member of Our Lady of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant. She led the Holy Rosary Prayer Group and sang in the choir for years. She is survived by her brother Lloyd Hymel and brother-in-law Lloyd “Peanut” Laurent; her children, son Bradford “Buddy” Gonzales and wife Eva, son John Gonzales and wife Shelby “Dannie”, daughter Paula Gonzales, son Chris “Tweety Bird” Gonzales, and daughter-in-law Joan Lambert Gonzales; her 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Marie is preceded in death by her husband of 38 years Joseph C. Gonzales, Sr.; son Joseph Carl Gonzales, Jr.; grandson Jacob Michael Gonzales; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eunice Hymel, Edith Laurent (Stephen), Lucille Bye (Ivy), Mabel Granier (Luke “Duck”) and Amy Laurent; brothers and sisters-in-law, George Hymel (Inez), Merlin Hymel (Martha), Nelson “Pierre” Hymel (Marie), Clifton “Skippy” Hymel (Doris), Ivy Hymel (Martha) and Lillian Hymel. Pallbearers are Jason Gonzales, Brian Gonzales, Casey Gonzales, Micha Mire, Dean Mire, Neil Mire, Adam Gonzales, and Zack Bergeron. Honorary Pallbearer is Steven Gonzales. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Hospice of Baton Rouge for their exceptional care and support during Marie’s final days.Visitation for Marie will be held on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, from 9 am until Mass of Christian burial at 11 am at Our Lady of Holy Rosary Catholic Church 44450 Hwy 429 St. Amant La. She will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Holy Rosary Mausoleum. A reception will follow at Orleans Room located at 43435 Weber City Road, Gonzales, LA 70737. Marie’s presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit and love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.
