Jean Horner was born in Portland, Oregon in 1947. In 1950, she moved to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, Biloxi, Mississippi in 1965 and the University of Southern Mississippi in 1970.
Jean Horner married Gordon Sandlin Buck, Jr. in Ocean Springs, Mississippi on August 29, 1970. They first lived in Longview, Texas, then Baton Rouge, Louisiana, then Prairieville, Louisiana. They have two children: Laura Jean Buck Smith (Steven) and Gregory Sandlin Buck and one grandchild, Wesleigh Jean Smith.
Jean was predeceased by her mother, Frances J. (Hooker) Horner, her father, George Patrick Horner, and her brother, Harry Paul Horner. She is survived by her husband, children, granddaughter, sisters Joan Fullwood (Ronnie) and Teresa Decker.
Jean was a philosopher, a musician, a great cook and an artist. Her favorite form of artistry was photography for which she received many honors, including Photographer of the Year by the Louisiana Photographic Society. She published a book of photographs about her home town of Ocean Springs, “A Walk Around the Harbor”. She also published a book of her favorite recipes, “Jean’s Best.”
For many years, Jean was a substitute teacher, teacher, and tutor at Parkview Baptist Elementary School. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, December 5, 2022 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to mass at Ourso Funeral Home from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Serenity Oaks Memorial Park.
