A native of St. Joseph and a resident of St. Amant, he died at 8:33 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2011. He was 63, a U.S. Navy veteran, a retired Local 198 pipe fitter and a welder for Rubicon. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Patricia Smith Hicks; daughter, April Babin Efferson and husband, Johnny; two sons, Chad Patrick Babin and wife, Tammy, and Wesley Wade Babin and wife, Mary; three sisters, Helen Hale, Sue Deshotel and husband, Bill, and Linda Hicks; and five brothers, Richard Hicks, Floyd Hicks and wife, Brenda, Lewis Hicks, Gordon Hicks and wife, Edna, and Michael Hicks and wife, Janice; nine grandchildren, Carey Babin and wife, Latoya, Morgan Babin, Zack Whittington, Nick Babin and Amber Pellerin, Bree Babin, Angel Russo, Alyssa Efferson, Dane Porrier, and Hunter Edwards; two great grandchildren, Jake Kendrick and Maci Babin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd Edgar and Ethel Howard Hicks; and three sisters, Faye Holland, Mattie Ruth Thomas and Vera Jean Breaux. A visitation will be held at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales, on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visitation will resume at the funeral home Thursday, Nov. 3, at 9 a.m. until religious service at 10 a.m., conducted by Pastor Bobby Ready. Burial will follow in Oak Lane Memorial Park. David liked hunting, fishing and gardening, but he loved his family the most. He was a loving, caring, and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. Pallbearers will be Chad Babin, Zack Whittington, Carey Babin, Nick Babin, Gordon Hicks, Bernard Bercegeay, Ronald Hale and Roger Flurry.
