Barrie Monks passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2022 at the age of 78. He is a native of Bristol, England and has been a longtime resident of Gonzales, Louisiana. He was the loving husband of Valerie Monks for 54 years. He was the devoted father of Julian Monks (Tara) and Anne Monks (Matt). He was fondly known as Papa to his grandchildren; Lylee, Jorja, Bailey, Mia, Samantha and Mead. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Diane Lyall (John). He is preceded in death by his parents Morley and Miriam Monks and his brother David Monks.
Barrie was a man of many talents, he could fix almost anything he put his mind to. He was a hard worker and very dedicated to his work as a Chemist. He truly enjoyed life to the fullest and tried to embrace all aspects he could: travel, music, sports, food and most importantly family.
Barrie played and coached soccer for many years. In the mid 80’s he formed the first boys soccer team in Gonzales. There was no soccer in Ascension parish at that time, so the team played in the Baton Rouge league. It was from Barrie’s efforts that subsequently several teams were formed and eventually Ascension had its own soccer league. He was also a major force in obtaining a location for Gonzales’s first soccer field. He went on to coach at St. Amant High School for the Ladies Soccer for many years. Soccer continued to be a big part of Barrie’s life both on and off the field.
Music also was a big part of Barrie’s life. He played guitar, banjo, and saxophone. He enjoyed listening to traditional jazz, jug band music, bluegrass, rhythm and blues and especially the comic operas by Gilbert and Sullivan.
Barrie was an avid reader. He loved poetry and of course the English classics. A love of Shakespeare’s works continued on from his school years in England. He was also a very active proud member of the Irish Club.
Barrie had an unwavering love for his wife and family. He loved spending time with them and sharing his interests with them as much as he could. He had so much love to give, he will truly be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
