Hugh “Jerry” Hodgden, 85, of Golden, passed away Sunday after a long struggle with complications from heart disease. Born in Holton, Kansas, to Burton Senior and Emily Hodgden, Jerry was the youngest of three boys. His brothers, Burton Junior and Lee Hodgden, preceded him in death.
Jerry was a Captain in the United States Air Force, a community leader, and loving humanitarian. After graduating from the University of Kansas with his master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Jerry built a 60 year career as an accredited geologist and was owner of the Hodgden Oil Company. He loved living in Golden and spent 21 years on the Golden Parks and Recreation Board as both chairman and vice chairman. “The Dean of Parks” was honored as a Living Landmark Awardee in 2016 for all of his contributions to the City of Golden. He danced with princes and princesses, interrupted nuclear submarine testing, and ultimately was a friend and father to many.
Jerry is survived by his eldest son, Larry, his daughter-in-law, Karyn and their children, Caitlyn and Caleb; his middle son, Bob, his daughter-in-law, Emily and their children, Jonathan, Aaron and Brooke; and his youngest son, Tuan.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 23rd, at the American Mountaineering Center, Foss Auditorium at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow immediately at the center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry’s name to: Foothills Art Center, Disabled American Veterans Charity or Foothills Animal Shelter.
