Fred was a veteran of WWII as a proud member of the Marine Corp. He was a rifle expert, fighting against enemy forces on Okinawa, Ryuku Islands and China.
Fred was preceded in death by his first wife Lillian and his second wife Connie. Fred is survived by his sons Darrell Gerstner (Nadyne), Patrick Flaherty (Jane), Daniel Flaherty (Ruth), Joseph Flaherty and daughters Becky Price (Launa Fackrell) and Paula Wenger (Doug) as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fred is also survived by his sister Shirley Hull and brother Raymond Gerstner.
Fred is a proud member of the American Legion Post 178, VFW Post 4171 and the Leadville Elks Lodge#236.
Fred was a shift boss in the Climax mine in Leadville Co and a general mine foreman at the Urad/Henderson mines in Berthoud CO. Fred enjoyed 31 years of retirement, spending a great deal of time their cabin at Green Mountain reservoir. He loved fishing, hunting and gardening and did these activities very well.
He will be sorely missed by his family and friends, please come help us celebrate Fred’s life on Friday, May 25th at 1:00pm with graveside services being held Golden cemetery after the funeral. A bereavement dinner will be hosted by the VFW Post 4171. Viewing will be held Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 4:00pm-6:00pm.
