William “Red” James Honn of Glendora, CA died peacefully at 9:20 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011 after a brief illness. Visitation will be held at Oakdale Mortuary in Glendora, CA on September 30, 2011 between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Memorial Services will be held at Grace of Calvary Lutheran Church located at 804 East Foothill Blvd. Glendora, CA, 91741. A viewing will begin at 12 p.m. and services will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011. A military burial will be conducted at Riverside Memorial Cemetery on October 3,, 2011 at 12 p.m.
William James Honn was born December 20, 1924 to Raymond and Avis (Yarrington) Honn in Griffin, Illinois. He served in the 2nd & 6th Marine Divisions during WWII from 1942 – 1945 where he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, the Purple Heart, the Sharpshooter Medal, the Bronze Star and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Ribbon with three stars. Bill Honn later moved to East Moline, Illinois and was employed by IH East Moline Works for 30 years. Bill was a dedicated member of Grace Lutheran Church where he spent many years being blessed with a caring congregation that made his life more fulfilling.
Having grown up in Chicago, Illinois, “Red” was a long-time loyal Cubs and Bears fan. When he moved to California in 1981 he devoted his time cheering for the Angels. An avid golfer, Bill Honn enjoyed his years working as the night ranger at Santa Anita Golf Course perfecting his golf game. In May of 2011, he was privileged to be able to receive a tribute of his courage and time served in WWII by participating in the Honor Flight. A special thank you to Jason Bates, his guardian, who devoted his care and dedication to making Red’s trip to the WWII Memorial in Washington, DC forever memorable. On his visit to the Quad-Cities he was blessed to be able to reunite with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren which made him very proud.
His son James Michael Honn preceded William in death. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years Dana Honn, his step-children Brian Bennett of St. Paul, MN and Cindy Rollins of Azusa, CA and his children, Alan Honn of Moline, IL; Kevin Honn of Derby, KS; Debbi Honn of Moline, IL; Geri Means of Glendora, CA; Kelly Honn of East Moline, IL; Cory Honn of MO; along with 14 Grandchildren and 20 Great-grandchildren, as well as many friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and all the young volunteers at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital for their caring commitment.
