Jean Evon Schwertfeger Hull passed away on April 16, 2020, in Hesperia, CA. Jean was born the youngest of three children on September 7, 1925, at Deerfield City, IL, to Ernest Schwertfeger and Annie Ruth Williams Schwertfeger. She is predeceased by her parents, brother Arthur T. Schwertfeger and sister Ora Mae Stafford, and nephews Arthur T. (“RC”) Schwertfeger, Jr., and Ernest Schwertfeger.
Jean attended Oak Terrace School in Highwood, IL, and Baldwin Park Grammar School in Baldwin Park, CA. The family moved from Ft. Sheridan, IL, to Baldwin Park, CA, in 1938. She graduated from Covina Union High School in Covina. She attended Woodbury College, Los Angeles, in 1951-52 and Citrus College, Azusa, in 1964.
“Jeannie” Hull was a standout player for the Monrovia Day & Night Owls girls softball team in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. She played infield, third base. The Owls won the 1948 World Amateur Softball Championships at Normandale Field in Portland, Oregon.
From 1952 to 1982, Jean worked for the Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T) and rose to a supervisor position. She moved from Baldwin Park to Monrovia, then to Apple Valley and Hesperia. During her retirement, she enjoyed membership with AT&T Pioneers, volunteering at City of Hope gift shop, and traveling around the USA and to Germany. Jean was an enthusiastic volunteer at the 1984 Olympics. She was a faithful Dodgers fan and enjoyed golf. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
She will be remembered as being fun-loving, having a “can do” attitude, and as a person who inspired others to be the best person they can be.
Jean is survived by nieces Miriam “Mimi” Schwertfeger and Marisa Schwertfeger Merkle, nephews Tom and Doug Stafford, and Chris Schwertfeger, and grand/great nieces and nephews.
Jean’s family is thankful to Nora Clemons and Caring Team Home Care in Hesperia for their care of Jean over these past years, and to Golden Angel Hospice for their care of Jean in her last hours.
