Rich and I knew, you were a special young man, from the moment we met you. You and Nat were the cutest couple. Thank you, for sharing your life and love for our daughter with us. And thank you for the memories of you, here, in our home, and all around Newport News, Virginia. And thank you for serving our country, for you made the ultimate sacrifice. Time with you, was too short, for you had an abundance of love of life to share. Our hearts ache for you, our Nat, your Mom and Dad, and all the family, friends. You were an incredibly funny and kind person and I saw it every time we camped or shared a holiday as a family,not connected by blood but by something even stronger, love. Many summers ago we watched you grow from a boy to a man. In that time, we got to know the young man who has become a hero, our hero. We never knew who you would become. Humble, kind, smart, funny, loving, caring, understanding, worldly, and strong.   All the traits that we wish we had, but you managed to put into your person; what a good man you became, what good man you taught us to be. We never knew what that really meant until we met you many years ago and yet you were that kid, and you were always the old soul, with all that knowledge just waiting to share it with us.

We remember the fishing trips, one million we are sure, with nothing to show for them but memories a blur.  There will always be a single fishing pole next to our chair, for you. We'll meet you at the lake.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another. 

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms, SPC Daniel Lewis Carlson, U.S. Army. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Danny. And to Danny it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan.  Danny you gave the last full measure of devotion for what you believed in and fought for.   No greater love and patriotism are shown than when a man lays down his life in service to his country.  Danny, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero.  With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure.  We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
