I am so sorry to hear this news. We didn't talk often, maybe a few times a year, but Father Vince was like a father to me. He would call me son. He married me and my wife in a truly touching and beautiful wedding ceremony. I first met him after a noon weekday Mass at St. Boniface in San Francisco around 2005, and we would see each other regularly as I worked just down the street. We celebrated his birthday together in Sausalito in 2007 and had such a fun day together. One of the first times we met, we did confession and he gave me the most insightful penance I've ever received: "Trust." I am so so sorry that I didn't have a chance to say goodbye and tell you again how much you mean to me. Through the sadness I will do my best to follow your advice and "trust" that you hear me now and are still with us in spirit.  Many blessings to you Father.

I will miss father Vincent so much. He prayed for me every day, and those prayers helped me to find a job. I will miss the times we went to dinner. A dear friend, and a great priest. Rest in peace good friend.

Words can not express the Love and kindness our family was shown by the people, Friars, sisters, and everyone in Southern California over the past week! The services Uncle Vince received were incredible and took our breath away! His decision to be buried among his brother priests at Mission San Luis Rey was exactly that his decision! Even to the end he showed obedience to God! Thank you everyone for Loving him and showing your Love and hospitality to us! He is not gone, he is a prayer away! May he watch over all of us! I choose to leave the order but nevertheless I love my brothers and the death of anyone is painfull may God be with Viincent and we have an intersesor for us in heaven.

Dear Cousin Vincent.  My first thought when I heard of your death was , Thank you God for such a wonderful cousin, loving, kind, joking, always that beautiful smile. I remember my cousin Vincie as the couscusu man on Christmas Eve chasing us around the house.  He grew into a very fine being leading a life of spiritual service.  He will be missed.

Two stories, February 10th 2002, while Father Vincent Hughes was Celebrating Mass at Saint Francis the following event took place      February 10th That night within the Liturgy of the Word, the first reading that I read before mass really Struck a Chord within my abdomen. Isaiah 58:7-10  Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.  Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.  Then you shall call and the Lord will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Hear I am!  If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you as midday.
     That night while distributing communion I started to get Host Conscious, paying more attention to the Eucharist than to the people around me, as the fourth person approached, the woman was heavyset, and short, and had the largest eyes I have ever seen, kind of like the Betty Boob cartoon figure, I hadn't seen her before nor since, I said the Body of Christ, she stuck out her tongue  and closed her eyes, as I reached halfway to her, to place the host on her tongue, the left quarter of it vanished, it was like it had been hit with a laser, for a moment dozens of little fragments seemed suspended, and this little host was no longer round.  I looked at the woman's shoulder, to the pew tops and back to the host before I realized the new edge wasn't cream colored  it was a bright, bright red, the new edge had a uniformed jaggedness to it like the edge of a quarter or a cog.  The 3 new curves, had I rotated it a quarter turn clockwise would have resembled a valentine's heart, with two edges of the cross touching the uppermost point of the two upper curves.  I was stunned, and pondered;Ok do I put it back or give her another she doesn't see it her eyes were closed and she still had her tongue out waiting for communion. I thought The Lord probably has a blessing for her with that the new edge of the host gained in dimension, the edge now resembling that of a blood vessel.  I gave it to her, didn't say a word to her or anyone at St Francis that night. A couple of years later he was again Celebrant there, he expressed sorrow to the congregation after mass about, a week before he was Celebrating mass in a very small congregation near a place that was hosting Promise Keepers, he expressed sorrow that his congregation was so small and their event was so large.  I walked up in front of the congregation to where he was sitting whispered in his ear, Do you remember me telling you of the Host I saw change? he said yes, I said you were the celebrant.

Our Beloved Father Vincent, you came into this world for one purpose and that was to devote your life to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Father Vincent was my cousin and as long as I can remember, he was committed to a life of service. Our Beloved Vincent took up his cross and walked bravely in the footsteps of our Lord.  Vincent lived a life of sacrifice, but also one of quiet joy and serenity. He now finds his rest in Heaven.   We have all been so blessed to know him.  Cousin Father Vincent, may you rest in God's Glory and His Heavenly Love. My love to you always, Cousin Marianne.
