Robert Kenneth Acaba (Kenny), was born in Compton, California on July 7, 1964. The family was transferred to Puerto Rico in 1974 due to his father’s position with the IRS. They settled in Northwest corner on the island in Aguadilla, Ramey field, an Air Force base turned Coast Guard Air Station. This became their new home and Kenny started 5th grade at Ramey School where he was very involved in swimming and was an altar boy at the Catholic Church.
While at Ramey School he worked as a lifeguard at the Coast Guard Pool. Kenny was awarded the certificate of appreciation from the Coast Guard for saving a young boy from drowning. He graduated Ramey School in 1982, as class president. He was accomplished in athletics and excelled in drama.
After graduating from Ramey School, he went to Arizona State University coming back to Puerto Rico in 1988. He attended the University of Puerto Rico receiving his masters degree in English Literature and was class valedictorian.
He taught at Ramey School for a short time before transferring Roosevelt Roads Navy Base. Kenny’s teaching career took him to Germany, which allowed him to travel all over Europe. He delightfully invited his family to visit and was able to share his love for Europe with them. They made many unforgettable memories while there. Finally, his travels brought him back to the US. He settled in Glendale, California living with his grandmother Mama Tina. He started teaching on the LA and Pasadena schools districts where he made a lot of good friends.
Towards the end he was lovingly care for by his Titi Yiya whom he loved very much. No matter what part of the world he was living he always came back to Puerto Rico for Christmas and summers, where he would indulge in swimming and kayaking at Crashboat beach and hanging out with his many friends.
For his birthday, in July, his brother Marco surprised Kenny by having a big birthday party in Aguadilla, attended by some of his friends who lived in the United States. It was unforgettable event and now, in hindsight, I wonder if they thought it would be his last.
Kenny will hold a special place in all of our hearts forever
