Zola “Zoe” Ruth (Drummond) Newton, 92, passed away on May 28, 2015. She was born in Trailcreek, Montana on the first birthday of her twin brother and sister, in the log cabin her father built on their homestead.
Zoe was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy I. (Doubleday) Drummond McNeil and Robert T. Drummond, husband, Lawrence c. Newton, Sister, Helen (Drummond) Cavaness, and brother, Robert E. Drummond.
She is survived by daughter, Donna (Newton) Owen (fiancé, Gonzalo Valenzuela), son, Gary S. Newton (Tracy, Stepson, Edward L. Newton, Grandchildren, Amy Milliron (Matthew), Matthew Owen and Nichole Davidson, and Great Grandchildren, Austin Davidson, Brooke Adams and Aiden Milliron, and nieces and nephews.
Zoe attended Kenilworth, Emerson and Roosevelt Elementary Schools, graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1940 and attended Phoenix College.
During “war time” Zoe worked for the Office of Price Administration, the Rationing Board, and the Veterans Administration. She was Secretary to the Commanding Officer at Papago Park German Prisoner of War Camp and was a secretary in the Director’s Office of the Phoenix Technical School.
Zoe retired from the working world in 1955 and with her husband, Larry, raised their family. To her, this was the most fulfilling job of her life. Family gatherings were her biggest pleasures. She made an occasional visit to a casino which she referred to as a “financial seminar.” She also enjoyed composing rhymes and trying to solve puzzles.
The Drummond family came to Phoenix in 1928 and she has remained here since then. She has lived in the same house she and Larry bought when they married in 1953.
Visitation will be on Friday June 5, 2015 at 9:30am Funeral Service at 10am at the Green Acres Mortuary, located at 5830 W. Missouri Avenue, Glendale, AZ 623-939-8321, followed by interment at Resthaven Park Cemetery, 6290 West Northern Avenue, Glendale AZ 623-939-8394.
