Pascual Arzate

Pascual Arzate was called “home” on the Lord’s day Sunday, March 7, 2021. He now peacefully rests eternally after giving it all in a full and complete 64 years of life. Pascual is survived by the love of his life Luz Amalia whom he was married to for 38 years; also, his adored children, son Christopher and daughters Amalia, Marisela and Kristina; his admired sons-in-law Goran Pejic (Amalia), Lane Wilkinson (Marisela) and Anthony Ledesma (Kristina); his cherished grandchildren Lucia Wilkinson (8), Olivia Ledesma (5), Theodore Pejic (3), Natalia Wilkinson (3) and Eli Ledesma (2); and beloved siblings Anthelma “Chema” Diaz, Baltazar “Bacho” Arzate, Isabel “Chabela” Rios and Prisciliana “Prisci”

Pascual was born May 17, 1956 in a small, remote southern border-town in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico called El Porvenir. He grew up with four sisters and two brothers as the fifth-born and youngest son to Prisciliana and Teodocio Arzate. He was raised on a farm with neither electricity nor running water. The days were slow and long and the nights were quiet and still. Pascual worked with the animals and grew a fondness for dirt, which would come to define him in a couple of ways: his ultimate career choice and his not-afraid-to-get-dirty attitude.

Pascual’s upbringing was a simple one: keep busy and work hard. Almost immediately he was cultivated for life on the family farm, from gathering eggs to herding cattle to cropping cotton, he was raised to contribute. And life was never boring because there was always something to do. In the evenings, much of the time was spent around family, recounting stories and playing games like cards, dominos and Loteria.

With two older brothers, Pascual learned at a young age to compete and that was never more evident than at the dining room table. With limited resources in a family of 7 children, there were times Pascual wouldn’t get his fill. He soon picked up on how eating faster meant he could head back for seconds. It’s partially why he acquired the boyhood nickname “Kilo”.

And that was Pascual: at the ready and quick to overcome any obstacle. Just like the time he and his brother Bacho took advantage of playing in a pool of water rather than toiling needlessly cutting down cotton stalks one at a time by hand. Turned out they devised a rudimentary cropping tool to efficiently trim the stalks in no time. Their mother Prisciliana would swear the following year’s harvest was more bountiful than ever.

He finished elementary school through sixth grade and soon thereafter began a life’s obsession with working. Compelled by his intense work ethic and strong sense of responsibility to family, he worked the family farm, sold various items including paletas de agua, and along with his brother Jose Ines harvested maize and beans in the fields. To increase his earning potential, Pascual began crossing the Rio Grande to pick cotton on larger lots for cents on the pound.

Then in 1972 after having his U.S. residency approved, Pascual joined his father to work in the U.S. at age 16. In the entirely rural uppermost panhandle of Texas, he initially worked as a ranch hand and later worked in a meat processing plant and on oil fields.

In pursuit of his American dream, Pascual was presented with the opportunity to live with the family of his aunt Caterina Vazquez (his mother’s sister) in Peoria, Arizona in 1978. He knew work prospects were abundant in booming Phoenix, and through work, destiny would bring Pascual and Luz together.

As fate would have it, Pascual met the love of his life while the two were working construction at the Westward Ho in downtown Phoenix in May 1980. A hard-working woman after his own heart, Luz caught Pascual’s attention, and after attempts to get himself noticed, Luz succumbed to and grew fond of Pascual’s persistence.

Their love proved true when Pascual and Luz married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic church on May 15, 1982 in Glendale. The following day with a single suitcase packed and a pair of one-way tickets in-hand to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Pascual and Luz embarked on their honeymoon with no hotel reservations.

They would reminisce about their unforgettable honeymoon in then-sleepy Vallarta, enjoying long walks on the soft, white beach hand-in-hand and the feel of the cool, salty breeze of the ocean on their skin, which left such a lasting impression that their future vacations were devoted primarily to the beach and the ocean.

After their honeymoon, Pascual and Luz packed what little belongings they owned and moved into a small trailer offered to them by Pascual’s parents in Booker, TX. Nine months later in February 1983, their first born, son Christopher, made them proud parents. And, a little over a year later in March 1984, Pascual and Luz welcomed their first daughter Amalia.

In 1985, Pascual and Luz to returned to Peoria after having the good fortune of buying a house. The modest three-bedroom home on El Caminito Drive would become a labor of love for Pascual over the next 36 years with constant projects and continual home improvements. His home was the canvas for his vision of the good life and it remains a collage of his works.

Pascual always strived for better. He achieved his naturalization in 1986 and earned his GED in 1987.

In September 1987, their third child, daughter Marisela, was born days after the Papal visit to Phoenix blessed Pascual with the chance to minister as an usher for the event. It was a special honor for Pascual to have been invited to volunteer and he never felt more privileged than to serve His Holiness Pope John Paul II. He would proudly display his certificate from the Vatican acknowledging his work.

Faith remained an integral component in Pascual’s life. A family pilgrimage in 1989 to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City fulfilled a promise Pascual and Luz made to the Virgen de Guadalupe. A year later in April 1990, Pascual and Luz completed their family with the addition of their fourth and final child, daughter Kristina.

In 1992, participating in his first Cursillo retreat and attending a Marriage Encounter conference with Luz, Pascual became spiritually re-invigorated. He became more active in his home parish St. Charles Borromeo, joining as a guitarist in the chorus and later directing the group. God’s will then took Pascual to live out his calling as church lector. He contributed at church functions and events, served in the church pastoral council and led marriage preparation classes alongside Luz.

All the while, Pascual continued his career in the construction industry contributing as an indispensable member of road paving crews. His working years proceeded in much the same way, Pascual waking up early to head into work before daybreak, battling scorching days paving under the desert sun, and closing the long workday as the rollerman finisher. He was a dedicated employee, and his incredible work ethic and practical knowledge amazed his colleagues. His commitment was rewarded when he accepted a challenge to supervise a crew for a period of time.

Despite working grueling and lengthy workdays, Pascual never complained because everything he did was for his family. He always returned home from work to keep up with chores, both yardwork and housework alike. He loved to spend time with his children and whenever he could he enjoyed cooking dinner. Vacations were also family affairs. Holidays coincided with family visits to see his parents. School breaks meant trips to the beach in Mexico. Later, over the next decade, ocean-boat cruises captivated Pascual and Luz.

In 2011, Pascual and Luz converted into empty nesters. The following year they were blessed with becoming first-time grandparents in 2012. Pascual occupied himself with work and living life with his expanding family in the years following. As it was for him when he grew up, he relished spending time with family, joking around, playing games, and having lively discussions. His free time was spent watching tv, taking in Netflix movies and listening to his favorite music on YouTube. He kept up on current events and politics, and he read.

He is loved and will be missed.

Pascual nació un jueves 17 de mayo del año 1956, en un pequeño y remoto pueblo fronterizo del estado de Chihuahua en México llamado El Porvenir. El creció con cuatro hermanas y dos hermanos. Fue el quinto hijo de Prisciliana y Teodocio Arzate y el más chico de los varones. Él se crio en un pueblito rural sin acceso a luz o agua potable. El transcurso de los días era lento y largo y las noches calmadas y calladas. Pascual trabajó con animales y se acostumbró a andar en la mugre, lo cual lo define de alguna manera ya que lo forjó a poder ejercer una carrera en la que nunca tuvo miedo a ensuciarse.

La crianza de Pascual fue simple: trabajar duro y mantenerse ocupado. Desde un principio fue impuesto de por vida a una familia campestre, desde recolectar huevos a alimentar ganado y cultivar maiz y frijol. Desde pequeño se le inculco el contribuir. Su vida nunca fue aburrida ya que siempre encontraba algo que hacer. Por las tardes, la mayoría del tiempo lo pasaba conviviendo con su familia, contando anécdotas y jugando cartas, domino o lotería.

Desde pequeño, Pascual aprendió de sus hermanos mayores a ser competitivo y fue más que evidente a la hora de comer. Con pocos recursos para una familia de 7 hijos, habia veces que Pascual no se llenaba, así que pronto se dio cuenta de que si comía más rapido podria volverse a servir un segundo plato de comida. Esto contribuyo parcialmente a que durante su niñez se le apodara “Kilo”.

Asi era Pascual: listo y rapido para sobrepasar cualquier obstáculo. Como la vez en la que él y su hermano Bacho se metieron a juguetear en una alberca en vez de estar cortando uno por uno los tallos de algodon de la pizca. Resultó que se habian ido a juguetear porque habian desarrollado una herramienta para cortar el algodon más rápidamente. Su mamá Prisciliana juraba que debido a que se cortó bien derechita, la cosecha de los siguientes años era más abundante que nunca.

Pascual estudió hasta la primaria, poco después comenzó su dedicación por el trabajo. Comprometido con su ética laboral y fuerte sentido de responsabilidad hacia su familia, él se dedicó a la vida del campo, y junto a su hermano José Inés cultivaron maiz y frijoles. Para sacar dinerito extra también se dedicó a la venta de paletas, y más adelante empezo a cruzar el Rio Bravo para la pizca de algodon en cultivos más grandes.

En 1972 después de haber recibido su residencia estadounidiense, Pascual se unió a su papa para trabajar en este lado a la edad de 16 años. En el norte del estado de Texas empezo a trabajar como asistente en el campo y después en una procesadora de carne y en los pozos petroleros.

En búsqueda del sueño americano, a Pascual se le presento la oportunidad de irse a vivir con la familia de su tía Caterina Vázquez (hermana de su mamá) en Peoria, Arizona en 1978. Él reconocia que habia más oportunidades de trabajo en Phoenix ya que la ciudad estaba creciendo, y por medio de su trabajo el destino lo unió con Luz.

Como el destino lo habia dispuesto, Pascual conoció al amor de su vida en 1980 mientras los dos trabajaban en Westward Ho en el centro de Phoenix. Luz, una mujer trabajadora, llamó la atencion de Pascual, y después de varios intentos fallidos de Pascual por obtener la atencion de Luz, finalmente Luz notó su perseverancia.

Su amor se hizo realidad cuando Pascual y Luz contrajeron nupcias en la iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro el 15 de mayo de 1982 en Glendale, AZ. Al dia siguiente con una maleta llena de suenos y amor, Pascual y Luz viajaron con boletos de solo ida y sin reservacion de hotel a Puerto Vallarta, México para disfrutar de su luna de miel.

Siempre platicaron de los momentos inolvidables que pasaron en el antiguo Vallarta, disfrutando de largas caminatas en la suave y blanca arena de la playa, tomados de la mano sintiendo la fresca brisa del mar en su piel; este recuerdo dejo una gran impresión en ellos ya que para sus futuras vacaciones la playa se convirtió en su punto vacacional de preferencia.

Después de la maravillosa luna de miel, Pascual y Luz empacaron todas sus pertenencias y se fueron a vivir a un pequeño tráiler en Booker, Texas que los papas de Pascual les habian ofrecido. Como todo cuento de enamorados, nueve meses después nació en febrero de 1983 su primogénito Christopher, convirtiéndolos en unos papas muy felices y orgullosos; poquito más de un año después la cigüeña regresó trayéndoles a su hija Amalia.

En 1985 Luz y Pascual regresaron a Peoria después de la fortuna de poder comprar una casa que sería el hogar donde crecieron sus hijos. La casa de 3 recamaras en el Caminito Drive se convirtió en un proyecto laboral de Pascual ya que por los siguientes 36 años le invirtió mucho amor a todos los proyectos que se hacían para mejorar su hogar. Su hogar fue el lienzo donde cumplió sus sueños de una buena vida, y aún sigue siendo un collage de recuerdos.

Pascual siempre buscaba el progreso personal. Él adquirio su naturalizacion en 1986 y completo su GED en 1987.

En septiembre de 1987, su hija Marisela, nació días después de la visita papal a Phoenix. Pascual fue bendecido con la oportunidad de ministrar como acomodador para el evento. Fue un honor especial para Pascual haber sido invitado a ser voluntario y nunca se sintió más privilegiado que servir a Su Santidad el Papa Juan Pablo II. Con mucho orgullo mostraba su certificado del Vaticano reconociendo su labor.

La fe siguió siendo un componente integral en la vida de Pascual. En 1989 realizaron una peregrinación en familia a la Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en la Ciudad de México cumpliendo una promesa que Pascual y Luz le hicieron a la Virgen de Guadalupe. Un año más tarde, en abril de 1990, Pascual y Luz completaron a su familia con la incorporación de su cuarta y última hija, Kristina.

En 1992, participando en su primer retiro de Cursillo y asistiendo a una conferencia de Encuentro Matrimoniales con Luz, Pascual se revigorizó espiritualmente. Se volvió más activo en su parroquia natal San Carlos Borromeo, uniéndose como guitarrista en el coro y más tarde dirigiendo el grupo. La voluntad de Dios llevó entonces a Pascual a vivir su llamado como lector de la iglesia. Contribuyó en las funciones y eventos de la iglesia, sirvió en el consejo pastoral de la iglesia y dirigió clases de preparación matrimonial junto a Luz.
