Norman Harry Gettings Sr of Phoenix Arizona passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family November 2, 2018. Norm was born in Youngstown Ohio on January 19, 1931 to Floyd Perry and Josephine Gettings.
Norm joined the Air Force and left Youngstown in 1949. After boot camp he landed in Phoenix at Luke Air Force Base where he served his country as a jet engine mechanic. In 1953 his love of dancing contributed to him meeting his future wife and love of his life at a Glendale USO dance. In 1954 Norm and Eula Maye Southard were married at First Christian Church on Central Ave in Phoenix AZ. After a short stint working with his new Father in law he returned to Luke to work Civil Service in the jet engine shop until his retirement in 1994.
Norm and Eula had a son, Norman Jr in 1955 and in 1957 moved into a new Hallcraft home in north Phoenix. In 1960 a second son Gary was born, and the family was complete.
Norm loved to travel and camp and after purchasing a little travel trailer in 1965 spent many weekends with his beloved family seeing the sites in Arizona and teaching his sons to camp and enjoy nature. The family traveled from coast to coast camping in that little trailer usually taking an entire summer month away from home to see the sites of the United States. After Norm Jr and Gary grew up and moved out of the house Norm purchased and rebuilt a snow damaged home in Pinewood Arizona where he and his wife spent most of their time whenever not working. Many wonderful days were spent in Pinewood with family and friends including Norm’s new precious grandchildren Dominic and Leslie. After retirement in 1994 Norm sold the home in Pinewood and began spending as much time as possible in San Diego. There rented a summer condo on the beach which was always open to visitors and family who enjoyed the hospitality of the Gettings family.
Norm was a member of Northwest Christian Church and later Palmcroft Baptist Church where he joyfully served and worshiped his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Norm loved to fellowship with his church brothers and sisters.
Norm is preceded in death by his beloved wife Eula (Jeannie) and took care of her in a devotion of love while she battled Alzheimer’s diseases. He is survived by two sons Norm Jr and Gary, 4 Grandchildren Dominic Gettings, Leslie Spector, Desiree Morris and Jasmine Morris, 6 Greatgrandchildren Drake, Sophie, Sean, Max, Stella and Sam and too many Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and in laws to name.
Norm will be remembered for his infectious smile, his love of life, his willingness to help anyone that needed help and his unwavering devotion to those that he loved.
