John Wesley Burns Sr., aged 81, passed away on January 7, 2024, after a brief battle with cancer. John was deeply devoted to his faith and had a strong relationship with his Lord and Savior. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. John was born and raised in Peoria, Arizona, and lived there until his passing. He entered the world on August 1, 1942, alongside his twin brother, Charlie. John is survived by his wife, Janet Burns, and his children, John Burns Jr., Pamela Kennedy, Irish Terry, Sylvia Terry, and Michael Terry. Additionally, he leaves behind 11 grandchildren: Courtney, Kaitlin, Lexia, Whitley, Shelby, Alex, Eric, Tayler, Aubree, and the newest set of twins to the family, Kody, and Karter. His beloved younger sister, Martha Burns, also survives him. Along with many nieces and nephews.
For almost 40 years, John owned and operated Burns Brothers Farms together with his brother, Charlie. Upon retiring three years ago, John continued to work in the farming business alongside his son, John Jr. Growing up and working on the family farm, which was once located at 83rd Avenue and Thunderbird, was a cherished and magical part of John's life. The farm was an enchanted place to grow up with the nurturing of his beloved parents, Noel and Velma Burns. Although it has since transformed into a thriving community, John and his family have fond memories of their time spent working the land there for many generations. Even after retiring, John would often visit the farms, circling the hayfields and making sure everything was running smoothly. Although he had not flown in years, John also had a deep appreciation for flying airplanes. Once Gary Gable taught him to fly airplanes, he was hooked.
In addition to his farming endeavors, John was a devoted member of the Church of the Nazarene. He served as a board member for many years and held a deep appreciation for the church and its values. He cherished his life in the church and served loyally.
While we will greatly miss John's presence on Earth, we take comfort in knowing that his suffering has ended and he has been joyfully reunited with those who have preceded him. A celebration of his life will be held at West Resthaven Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 10 am with a short graveside service to follow. West Resthaven: 6450 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale, Arizona 85301.
