Gene was member of the IBEW since 1964. He served his Journeyman Lineman apprenticeship in Amarillo, TX. He came to Phoenix, AZ, in 1970 and was hired at APS as Journeyman Lineman. In 1972, the former Business Manager asked him to come to work at the local union office as a Business Representative. His responsibilities were to represent the Bargaining Unit employees of APS working at the Four Corners Power Plant on the Navajo Reservation; the APS offices in Page, Cholla Power Plant, Holbrook, Winslow, Cottonwood, Prescott, and Phoenix; and the Phoenix Ocotillo and West Phoenix Power Plants. He also represented the Bargaining Unit employees working at the Navopache Electric Co-Op in Lakeside, AZ. At the time of Gene’s retirement from the Local in July 2004, he was only the third member of IBEW Local 387 to be elected Business Manager.
Gene retired to his home in Glendale, AZ, in July 2004 where he played with his “pride and joy” a yellow lab named River-Louie and where he built his “dream shop” and did woodworking from dusk to dawn until he lost his eyesight to macular degeneration.
Gene was a constant companion and forever loving husband of his wife of 29 years, Janet. You very seldom saw one without the other!! He was the father of
Deborah Lynne Barrett and Katherine Celeste Mathis, and a grandfather and great grandfather. He was also the brother of Maryann Hill who currently is living in Texas. Gene was so loved by his family and friends and will forever be missed!
