It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donnie Ross Smith (86) on September 23, 2021. He was a dedicated husband, doting father, lovable grandpa, servant of Jesus Christ and friend to all who knew him. Donnie was the eighth child born to James Holly Smith and Leona Smith (Prather) on November 20, 1934 in Peoria, Arizona. His siblings were Erlene Hauser, Robert, Geraldine Rollins, John Julian "J.J." Clyde, Chester Betty Wray, Melvin and Larry.
Donnie grew up on the family farm working in the cotton fields alongside his father and six brothers. He graduated from Peoria High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army for two years. Upon returning to Peoria from his assignment in Japan, Donnie soon found himself head over heels in love with a cute young gal who later became his wife of 63 years, Sherry Smith (Cook). Together they raised three daughters: Shelly (Greg) Luft, Alison (Don) Phillips and Jenifer (Jim) Hogg. He had nine grandchildren: Daniel (Lacie) Luft, Lucas Hogg, Jay (Ali) Luft, Mary (Josh) Flom, Paige (Cody) Wilson, Coleman Hogg, William Hogg, David Phillips and Abigail (Jackson) Cuyno, as well as eight great-grandchildren: Josiah, Kai, Zeke, Kezia, Beckett, Auden, Layla, Willow and one more on the way. He also leaves behind a brother, Melvin Smith.
Donnie was the owner of a successful concrete business for over fifty years. He started out working with his brothers and eventually went out on his own. He found joy and satisfaction in serving the Nazarene Church in numerous building projects and Work & Witness trips around the world. He gives God the glory and praise for a life well lived.
