He proudly enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 where he completed a tour in Vietnam, served in multiple posts both in country and overseas as well as serving many years as a Drill Sergeant. After retiring from the Army he worked for the Veteran’s Administration in Phoenix, serving his country for over 40 combined years.
Mack, as he was called, enjoyed fishing and was active in dart and bowling leagues throughout the Valley. He never knew a stranger and made friends wherever he went. Many family members can attest to frequent “Wait, Mack as in related to Charlie Mack?!” through the years when someone would hear their last name. He had a relatable story or expression for just about any occasion or question you could ask him including his regular sayings you’d hear often like “If you’re on time you’re late and if you’re early you are on time” or how “He may not have always been right, but he was never wrong.”
He was eternally proud of his family and their accomplishments, and could frequently be found celebrating them to anyone who would listen.
Mack is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Bassie Mack, step-children Otis Piper Jr and Sherlyn Jackson, and great grandson Cristiano. He legacy lives on with his wife Dorothy Mack, children Steven (Debbie) Mack, Jodi Avecilla, Paul Harris, Nikki (Randy) Mack, and Diandra Mack; grandchildren Christina, Veronica, Ben, Aurora, Mary-Elizabeth, Eric, and Aiden as well as his great grandchildren Owen, Joah, Myles, and Clara-Mae.
Mack’s commanding presence, sage advice and expansive life experience will be sorely missed and his memories cherished. His work ethic, kindness, and thirst for knowledge lives on in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
