Carl is survived by his wife Linda (Jacobs) Payne, his children and their spouses Terri (Dight) Payne, Michael and Cece (Romo) Payne, Terry and Jennifer (Bennett) Payne, Gary and Mary (Sloan) Payne, and Stacy and Bill Kettrey. Carl is the proud Grandpa & "Papa" to his grandchildren: Tiffany, Brandon, Joshua, Travis, Tyler, Alysia, Miranda, Wesley, Callie, Troy, Molly, Aaron, Alex, Collin and Cameron. He is also "Papa" to 16 great grandchildren with more on the way.
Carl was proceeded in death by his wife, Betty (Griffin) Payne, his parents Leonard and Louise (Rudd) Payne, his brothers Sonny, and Donny, his eldest son Ricky Lee, and his grandson Zachary Norman Payne.
Carl was born in Phoenix, on June 20, 1938 the third child of Leonard and Louise. He was a student member of FFA (Future Farmers of America), played on sports teams and graduated from Glendale High School. Carl and Betty were high school sweethearts, they eloped by driving to California with a few friends where they married on March 8, 1958. This started a marriage which lasted 53 years until Betty’s death in 2010. Carl and Betty raised 5 children along with being a home to many foster children. They raised Lisa and Cindy (Loengood) from a young age until each of the girls became adults. Carl completed associates training to become an HVAC mechanic and retired after working 36 years for Associated Grocers / Fleming Foods. He developed friendships during his school years and working career which lasted his lifetime. Carl and Linda were married in Sedona on October 12, 2011 and had 8 years together, residing much of the time in Dewey, AZ. They enjoyed traveling together, and one of their trips was to the Holy Land where Carl was thrilled to be baptized in the Jordan River. Carl stayed busy in his later years restoring engines, tractors and vehicles, including his prize winning 1948 Chevy pickup.
Carl had a pure faith in Jesus Christ which was strengthened by his membership in the Church of Christ. He was happy to serve, teach or offer prayers as a regular attendee at services in each community where he lived. He was a devoted father who spent many seasons coaching his children in youth baseball. Carl attended numerous school and sporting events in support of his children and later his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carl enjoyed camping, hunting, riding motorcycles, and inspired these interests in his family. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and attended as many family gatherings and birthday parties as he could. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00PM on March 20, 2020 at West Resthaven Funeral Home, 6450 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale, AZ 85301 with a viewing beginning at 1PM.
