Calvin Dale Ussery

Calvin Dale Ussery of Glendale, Arizona passed away on Monday, March 26, 2018, after losing his courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Calvin was lovingly known as Cal or Pop by those closest to him and was 87 years old when he went to be with his beloved Bessie in heaven.

Calvin was born in Gatesville, Texas on October 11, 1930. He was married to his beloved wife, Bessie Ussery on October 3, 1953; they were married almost 64 years.

Calvin aka Cal or Dale, was extremely proud of his military service. Calvin served his country well. He was in both the Navy and the Air force for a total of 25 years, retiring as a tech sergeant. He proudly served on a secret mission to pick up downed Pilots in the Korean War and was very successful during his mission. He again served his Country in the Vietnam War. He could tell you numerous things about carriers, destroyers and then Bombers, Fighter Jets etc. He was a great mechanic and could fix anything, even broken kids toys; which we so appreciated. He had a love of sports but was extremely happy when coaching Pop Warner and helping to mold the youth of his time so they would have an easier time as they went on to big and better things. Cal enjoyed the water tremendously, left over from the Navy for sure. He enjoyed spending time with his family and numerous family friends and pulling multiple skiers behind his huge boat.

He was always eager to lend a hand to friends, neighbors and anyone else who needed it. He retired from the Services and went into Building & Grounds Superintendent for Apollo High School. He made the school safe for students, teachers and faculty and was very proud of compliments he received from those who would drive by and see the school.

Cal is survived by his four children, Collette, Amber, Cristie and Durrell, his six grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Calvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bessie R. Ussery (2017)

The visitation will be held at West Resthaven, 6450 W. Northern Avenue, Glendale, Arizona 85301on Monday, April 2, 2018 from 5-8 p.m.

Funeral services will also be held at West Resthaven on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 9:00 a.m., with burial services immediately following at the same location. A reception will take place following the burial services at the Eagles located at 7575 N. 67th Avenue, Glendale, Arizona.
