Arlene Cook Robertson

Arlene Cook Robertson, 95, of Sun City, Arizona passed away on the evening of October 21st 2015. She was born September 1st 1920 in Phoenix, AZ to Elvin and Darlie Cook. Arlene grew up on her parents’ farm in Peoria, AZ near 83rd Avenue and Olive. Arlene attended Peoria Elementary School and Peoria High School where she graduated in 1938. Then, it was off to Arizona State Teachers College where she graduated in 1942 with a BA in education. While in college, Arlene would ride a bus home from Tempe almost every weekend to visit her parents and help on the farm. Her first teaching job was in the Wilson School District, in Phoenix, where she taught for three years. This was when she met Robert E. (Bob) Robertson on a date set up by one of her friends. Arlene and Bob were married April 9th, 1946 in Phoenix and honeymooned at the Grand Canyon. In 1946, she was hired by the Peoria School District and started teaching while Bob started farming. During her 28 years of teaching the children of Peoria, she taught grades 2, 6 and 7 as well as art and P.E. Arlene was instrumental in starting the summer recreation program in Peoria. She was active for many years in Junior Woman’s club and Peoria’s Women’s club, serving as club president in 1956. She loved to play bridge and pinochle with friends and family. When Arlene retired in 1982, her and Bob traveled the US in their mobile home or relaxed at their cabin in Pinetop. Her love of children continued when she became a grandmother. She was always ready to attend her grandchildren’s school and sports activities and baby sit when needed. She truly cherished time spent with family. Arlene is survived by her son Steve and his wife Jacquie, grandchildren Janel and Garett, also, her sister Betty Palmer and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday, October 26th at 10:00AM at the Chapel of the Chimes located at 7924 N 59th Avenue in Glendale. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.
