Peter (Pete) M. Cargill, age 57, passed away on September 20, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by his family and friends. Pete was born on October 26, 1956 in St. Joseph, Missouri to Ralph and Mary (Robertson) Cargill. As the youngest of six children, “Petey” was adored (spoiled) by his siblings and grandparents. At Central High School in St. Joseph, MO, Pete’s natural leadership skills and affable personality won him a place in the hearts of his fellow students, and he served as student body president of the school. Pete graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO in December of 1979, with a degree in accountancy and achieved academic excellence in his studies. He impacted the lives of his fellow fraternity brothers while serving as president of his chapter of Phi Gamma Delta and as president of the university’s Inter fraternity Council. Pete married Cynthia Lee Baker of Shelbina, Missouri, in May of 1980. Pete earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA in May, 1988 and worked in the field of corporate finance. He was known for his quick wit, sharp mind, and great work ethic. Later, Pete incorporated his lifelong love of history and politics into teaching at Outreach Christian Education in Avondale, MO. Pete’s students have fond memories of Mr. Cargill’s storytelling abilities and his genuine love for each one of them. Pete was the proud father of Meagan Marijean Cargill, Emily Marie (Cargill) Lyons and Christopher Baker Cargill. Pete adored his children and loved playing football with them on the neighborhood greenway, going out for ice cream (or any sweet treat), creating homemade french fries in the shapes of their initials, watching their athletic sports events, going to movies, and talking with them about anything and everything. Pete always wanted to know what was going on in their lives and his face would light up with the biggest smile when Meagan, Emily, or Christopher walked through the door. Pete loved being grandpa to Raine Cargill Lyons (7) and Baker Kennedy Lyons (2). The boys’ memories with their grandpa include trips to the pumpkin patch, Fritz’s railroad restaurant, the zoo, Stroud’s Fried Chicken and grandpa letting them play "rough-house” with him. Pete’s brilliant mind, unconditional love, and genuine spirit will be sorely missed. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph M. and Mary T. Cargill, and brother, Stephen Randall Cargill. He is survived by his wife, three children, and two grandsons as well as his devoted siblings Robin (Kirt) McLean, Georgia Cargill, R. Patrick Cargill, Sarah (Bob) Shinogle, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Pete’s family would like to thank their extended family, church family, and friends for all the love and support given through the years. Service will be 10:00 am, Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Second Baptist Church, 300 E. Kansas Liberty, MO 64068. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, 5:00 to 8:00pm at White Chapel Funeral Home, 6600 NE Antioch Rd., Gladstone, MO 64119. Interment White Chapel Memorial Gardens. Contributions in Pete’s honor may be given to Camp Challenge in Alaska where his daughter has served as summer camp counselor for many years. Pete loved hearing of his daughter’s adventures in the wild. Address information is Open Bible Ministries (Camp Challenge) 138 Farewell Avenue, Fairbanks, AK 99701.
