Julia Ann Slavin passed away on Monday, November 20, 2023. She was 90 years old. Julia was born on January 19, 1933, in Salem, Nebraska to her parents, Claude and Winifred Messinger. In May 1952, Julia married Roy Slavin and the couple had three children: Rodney, David, and Verna. Julia and Roy lived in Kansas City for over 60 years. She and her family enjoyed life at the lake boating, fishing, swimming, and water skiing. Roy’s work with Trans World Airlines allowed the pair to travel to many exciting destinations. They also enjoyed going on cruises.
Julia was an avid Chiefs fan for much of her life. She was a Chiefs season ticket holder from 1974 to 1990. When her husband accepted the position as a Legislator for District 1 with the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in May 2008, Julia was extraordinarily supportive and helped her husband immensely. They never missed a CPN festival or event. As an avid sewer, Julia made the majority of regalia for tribal members. She was an honorary member and loved the tribal culture. They were family.
She was pretty good with numbers, which made her a great blackjack player. Shortly before her passing, Julia had fun playing cards in Las Vegas with her son and daughter. She was so full of life and joy and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Slavin, her parents, Claude and Winifred Messinger, son, David Slavin, sisters, Ila West, Cleo Masset, Erma Menze, and Iona Mez, brothers, Bob Messinger and Bill Messinger.
