John grew up in Kansas City, North; and graduated from North Kansas City High School. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1966. After his service, he became an apprentice plumber. He was soon a master plumber, the career he followed until his retirement. One of his biggest accomplishments was overseeing the construction of the “Precious Moments” fountain in Carthage, Missouri. He married Holley (Light) Atkins in July, 1969. Their marriage was blessed with two sons. John was involved in their baseball team as coach; later serving as commissioner of the Southern Platte County Athletic Association.
John loved fishing and boating. Early in their marriage, he and Holley spent many weekends water skiing. In his retirement he enjoyed fishing from his pontoon boat with his sons. On the boat, in the Lake of the Ozarks, was his happy place.
He is survived by his wife, Holley; sons, Chris and Andy; and granddaughter Madison. He is preceded by his father, Hart Atkins; mother, Sally Shannon; and brother, Tom Atkins.
Visitation will be held at White Chapel Funeral Home from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, August 1, 2023. The service will follow at 2:00 with a graveside following immediately.
