Jean was born on a farm near Emery, South Dakota on November 11, 1939 to the late Clarence and Viola (Stoltz) Geppert. She married Del Black on May 16, 1959 in Emery before moving to Lincoln, Nebraska where she gave birth to her first two children: Craig and Renae.
After three years in Lincoln, Jean and Del moved on to Independence, Missouri where they welcomed two more children: Kori and Kevin.
As a teenager, Jean loved music and was the president of her Elvis Presley fan club. After moving to Independence, Jean worked nineteen years at Blue Ridge Bank in Kansas City, Missouri and seven years at Farrand Farms garden center, making use of her green thumb and love of flowers. Jean was a diehard sports fan, cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, as well the Kansas State Wildcats. A skilled and creative seamstress, Jean crafted the costumes sported by concrete geese statues on porches throughout the Kansas City area. She enjoyed traveling with Del, a sports writer for the Kansas City Star. Upon retirement, they visited family members throughout the U.S. and Latin America.
She is preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Viola Geppert of Emery, South Dakota and her brother Jerry Geppert, also of Emery.
Jean is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Del Black of Kansas City, Missouri; son Commander Craig Black, USN (retired), (Elizabeth) of Arlington, Virginia; daughter Commander Renae Black, USN (retired), of San Diego, California; daughter Kori Hall (Curtis) of Kansas City, Missouri; and son Kevin Black (Julie) of Overland Park, Kansas. Her surviving siblings are brother Rick Geppert (Dawn) of Kalispell, Montana; sister Joanne Guy (Bob) of Kernersville, North Carolina; and sister Delonde Skrovig (Jim) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She loved and doted upon her grandchildren: Adam, Caleb, and Captain Zack Wilson USMC; Tyler and Jason Black; Sarah and Aaron Hall; and Jamie, Olivia, and Carson Black.
