Janet Harmon Cline, 62, of Overland Park, Kansas, died on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center surrounded by friends and family. Janet is survived by her husband, James Kevin Cline; her son, James Michael Cline and his wife, Amanda Cline; sisters Cathy Lombard, Ann Smith, Carol Germano, Judy Woodson and Gail Crosby; her mother Lois Harmon; her grandchild, due in December of 2017; and numerous nephews, nieces, and close friends. Janet was born on July 8, 1954, in Kansas City, Missouri, the second child of James and Lois Harmon. A lifelong resident of the Kansas City metro area, Janet graduated from Park Hill High School and earned both a BS in Psychology from Avila College and a Masters of Higher Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Janet was a beloved wife and mother, and she and her husband Kevin were married for thirty-nine years. She adored her only son Michael, as he was her golden boy and one of her greatest joys in life. She attended all of Michael’s ball games during his childhood, and she loved to spend time with him and his wife Amanda. She looked forward to the birth of her first grandchild due later this year. As one of six sisters, Janet looked forward to the annual sisters’ Christmas weekend with gifts exchanged, lots of laughter, and time together with family. Her sisters remember her as kind and loving, a great story teller while, as the second eldest, always making certain to have the last word. Passionate about higher education, Janet held the position of financial aid director at Metropolitan Community College (MCC)-Penn Valley before serving as the Dean of Students at MCC-Longview until her retirement in 2014. After her retirement, she continued to tutor and mentor students weekly at Hawthorn Elementary School in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and will be remembered as a faithful volunteer to both teachers and students alike. Janet was an avid animal lover, dedicating her time to animal shelters and adopting rescued dogs, including her dogs Laser, Hooper and Shine. She also loved books and was a voracious reader especially enjoying time on her Kindle after retirement. She was preceded in death by her father James Jennings Harmon; her paternal grandparents Jennings and Sallie Harmon; and her maternal grandparents Donald and Lona Roberts. Janet’s Celebration of Life will be held from 6pm to 9pm on July 14, 2017, at White Chapel Funeral Home in Gladstone, Missouri. In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Kansas City Pet Project, Wayside Waifs or another charity of your choice.
