Howard was born in Oak Park, Illinois June 18, 1939, the eldest son of the late Roy H. and Bernice L. (Rejewski) Love.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Frances H. Love; daughters, Cindy Clegg (Kelly O’Leary) and Donna (Larry) Hall; grandchildren, Julia Keedy and Paul (Angela) Clegg; and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Tom (Kathy) Love; nieces, Julie Love-Domeier and Susan (Chad) Genton; grand-nephew Zachary Genton; and grand-niece, Lauren Genton.
Howard spent his younger years living in the Chicago area, Perry, Iowa and Portage, Wisconsin. He graduated high school from Marmion Military Academy in Aurora, Illinois in 1957. He then moved to Kansas City, Missouri where, after attending Rockhurst College, he joined the US Army in 1960 in service to his country. He spent six months on active duty at Ft Eustis, Virginia and was subsequently transferred to the Army Reserve at Fort Leonard Wood where he served with the 325th General Hospital Group for another five and a half years.
Following his active duty, he began a lifelong career in railroading starting in 1961 as a Switchman for the Kansas City Southern Railroad. Over the years, he was promoted to Yardmaster and finally to Trainmaster. In addition to working for the KCS, he also worked for the Soo Line and the Canadian Pacific Railroads, eventually retiring from the CP in 1996. He worked very hard as a Trainmaster and was on-call virtually 24/7 for many years. He received numerous safety awards for his faithful service. He spent his well-earned retirement years playing golf, traveling with Frances, enjoying family events, tending to his yard, and avidly following area sports teams.
