Gary was born on October 8, 1942, in Kansas City, Missouri to Malcolm & Dorothy Shelton. He graduated from North Kansas City High School in 1962.
Gary began working for Western Electric/AT&T/Lucent Technologies as a Circuit Board Repair Technician where he met Linda on a blind date. Gary married Linda Fisher in 1970. Over the next several years, their jobs took them to Florida and Texas, finally settling in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, where they have resided for the past 31 years.

Gary and Linda were married 53 years. He was a wonderful, generous, witty, and dedicated man who loved his family, boating and lake life. He was passionate about keeping his lawn meticulously groomed.
