Dorothy was born on July 2, 1930 in Lawrence, KS. She was raised in Lawrence and earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Kansas. She and her husband, James R. Rich, first met at KU and were married on campus at Danforth Chapel. The couple lived in several cities before becoming longtime residents of North Kansas City, MO where they raised their four children.
She was a devoted wife and mother, and a caring grandmother as her extended family grew. She cherished flowers and nature and was dedicated to feeding the birds, stray cats and friendly critters that were always drawn to her backyard. She was a avid crafter of latch hooks, a crossword puzzle enthusiast and a collector of teddy bears. She surrounded herself with whimsical chachkies, beloved photos and treasured memories that she held dear.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Rich; her son, Stephen W. Rich; and her parents, Arthur & Elisabeth Davidson. She leaves behind her daughter, Sheryl (Jerry) Rich-Hays of Topeka, KS; her sons, Robert (Gayla) Rich of Lake Stevens, WA and Jamie (Antonio) Rich of Kansas City, MO; her brother, David Davidson of Wetmore, MI; seven grandchildren, Benjamin (Janis) Claypool of Ottawa, Ontario; Julie (Lawrence) Dietze of Lawrence, KS, Andrew (Rebecca) Claypool of Lawrence, KS; Stephen Claypool of Lawrence, KS; Joanie Rich of Lynnwood, WA; Marcie Rich of Everett, WA and Jason (Sarah) Rich of Mill Creek, WA; as well as eight great-grandchildren (Ava & Hudson Claypool, Sophia & Isabelle Dietze; Oniya & Heron Claypool; and Jenna & Andrew Claypool) and one great-great grandson (Brayden).
A memorial service with family was held on January 17th in Lawrence, KS. Interment will be at White Chapel Cemetery in Gladstone, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in her honor to the Lawrence Humane Society.
