Charles Edward Kavanaugh (Ed), beloved father, Papa, great-grandfather, brother, and mentor, passed away peacefully on June 28th, 2024, at the age of 86 surrounded by his daughter, Kirby, and granddaughters, Madison and McKenzie at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas. Born on September 25, 1937, Ed lived a life full of love, dedication, and laughter, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Ed is survived by his loving family: his sons, Kurt and Kent Kavanaugh, and daughters-in-law, Stephanie and Donna Kavanaugh; his daughter, Kirby Kavanaugh, and son-in-law, Brandon Harpold; his grandchildren, Madison, McKenzie, Katie, Andrea, Melissa, Tyler, Matthew, and Molly; and his seven great-grandchildren.
A brilliant student and athlete, Ed earned a full-ride scholarship for basketball to Northwest Missouri State University. He went on to attend the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry, graduating at the top of his class in both dental school and orthodontic residency. His dedication to his craft led him to a remarkable 57-year career practicing orthodontics in Kansas City, MO, and surrounding towns.
Ed's contributions extended beyond his professional life and into his community. From 1979 to 1982, he served as a Kansas City Police Commissioner. In this role, Ed demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens. He worked closely with the police department, fostering trust and cooperation within the community. His leadership and vision helped shape a more secure and harmonious Kansas City, earning him the respect and admiration of both the police force and the residents.
Ed was more than just an accomplished orthodontist; he was a man of many passions. He loved gardening, reading, traveling, and sharing stories. Known as the snazziest dresser in all of Kansas City, he brought joy to every room he entered with his jokes and warm personality. Above all, Ed cherished his time with his family and the meaningful interactions he had with each of his patients.
Throughout his life, Ed served as a mentor to many, including colleagues, patients, staff members, friends, and especially his family. His legacy, wisdom, kindness, and humor will be dearly missed.
Ed was preceded in death by his youngest son, Kelly Kavanaugh; his sister, Elizabeth Coots; and his parents, Cicero and Audentia Kavanaugh.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 26th from 5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at Newcomer's White Chapel Funeral Home, located at 6600 N.E. Antioch Road, Gladstone, MO 64119.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 27th at 10:00 a.m. at Newcomer's White Chapel Funeral Home, located at 6600 N.E. Antioch Road, Gladstone, MO 64119. Following the service will be a funeral procession to Fairview Cemetery for a graveside service located at 101 E Kansas Street, Liberty, MO 64068.
Donations can be made to the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry, to be added to the Kelly Kavanaugh Scholarship Fund, continuing Dr. CE Kavanaugh's legacy of supporting education and excellence in honor of his beloved son.
Charles Edward Kavanaugh's life was a testament to the power of hard work, kindness, and a good sense of humor. He will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
