It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of James Garfield (Gary) MacKillop 82, on May 7th , 2019. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Dave and Kay (Vacheresse) MacKillop. He was predeceased by two brothers in infancy. Gary is survived by his wife of 55 years Rae MacKillop, as well as his children, Cathie (Lloyd) Caldwell, Dartmouth, Ron (Sharon) MacKillop, Glace Bay and John (Gail) MacKillop, Pickering. Poppa will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Amy, Kate, Ewen Bradley, Heather, Bree and Matthew, and great grandchildren James, Mackenzie-Rae and Henry. Gary took great pride in all the accomplishments of his family. Gary is also survived by his brother David (Lorraine) McKillop. Gary had a great number of interests and pastimes. He was a life long Montreal Canadians and L.A. Dodgers fan. He bowled in numerous leagues in town and served as league statistician for many of those years. He enjoyed horseshoes, darts, swimming, skating, boating, mackerel fishing, picnics, BBQs, hosting parties and summers at the bungalow. Mira held a special place in Gary’s heart. Upon retiring from Nova Scotia Power (Seaboard) after 27 years, Gary and Rae moved to Mira where he could enjoy the splendid view of Mira Bay from his favourite chair on the deck. He liked nothing better than when friends would drop by for a visit. Gary derived much joy from time spent with family and friends. Always quick with a joke or funny story, Gary liked to see the humour in life. He often said, “Done dragging” should be on his tombstone. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held at Patten Funeral Home on Monday May 13,2019 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
