Jerry was born in Birch Grove, on April 29,1939 to the late Eugene and Alice (Taylor) Smith.
Dad touched the lives of many people with his smile and laugh and maintained his sense of humour to the end, and he loved telling stories and having a good joke. He worked for over 34 years in the coal mines. He worked at 4-Star, #26, Prince and Lingan Colliers. One of his most proud accomplishments, was his involvement with the Birch Grove Volunteer Fire Department, which he served for over 62 years and was retired Fire Chief, and honorary member and continued to take part in the fire department. He also loved to sing. He was a member of several choirs over the years; St. Paul’s Anglican Choir, Port Morien and St. Mary’s Choir, Glace Bay, the Firemans Choir and the Inspirational Singers. He volunteered as an usher at Center 200 for over 20 years, he loved chatting with everyone and watching the Eagles play. He also loved to bowl and belonged to the Bush and Devco Pensioners Leagues in Glace Bay and in his younger years a favorite pastime was spending many summers camping with his family. Dad always enjoyed and cherished his Sunday conversations with his “old Buddy” Florian, PEI and the Boys in Boston, MA.
He was a life-long resident of Birch Grove, a member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Morien. He will be sadly missed by his children Lana (Winston), Glace Bay and Glenn, Birch Grove; he was fondly known as ‘Poppy’ by his four grandchildren, Ally (James), Jacob, Carter and Ethan as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jerry is also survived by his brother Sheldon (Bernadette), Birch Grove, and sister- in- law Donna, Birch Grove.
