It is with heavy hearts that we that family announce the passing of our father Robert Jenkins, age 70, of Tower Road.
Dad worked in the construction business all his life. He was a member of Local 1115, Laborer’s Union. In his younger years, he worked for Joneljim Construction and Municipal Ready Mix until he opened his own business, GRJ Cement Finishers Ltd. His dream came true running his own business for 30 successful years until he had to retire in 2016 due to health issues. While retired, Dad couldn’t stay away from the cement business so he would go to his son’s job sites to check on him and inspect his work. Dad’s retirement also lead him to a new passion for antique cars recently collecting a 1956 Crown Victoria and a 1965 Mercury Comet. He loved driving them around town and attending local car shows.
Dad was also a member of the Sargent’s Mess where he played darts, made lots of friends and had many laughs.
Dad leaves to mourn his daughter Lynn (Silby) Barrett and son Kevin; his grandchildren that he cherished Colin (Taylor), Nicole (Jared), Emma, Zackary (Victoria), Alexis, Liam and Jaelyn; former spouse Gayle; brothers Brenden (Shirley), Albert (June), Rudy (Doreen), Clyde (Leone), Wade (Denise) and Roy; sisters Marilyn, Claudine, Caroline, Jane (Ken), loyal employee of GRJ Cement Finishers and close friend John Gilmet, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Robert was predeceased by his parents Alex & Leah; brothers Buster and Vern; brothers-in-law Blair and John and nephews Richard, Justin and Allen.
Visitation will take place Thursday, August 23 from 6-9pm at Patten Funeral Home, Union Street, Glace Bay with service on Friday, August 24 at 2pm in St. Luke’s United Church in Donkin. Donations to the family can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
