It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, Elizabeth “Edna” Nearing, 86. Edna passed away suddenly at home on October 30, 2024 in Glace Bay.
Edna was born on April 23, 1938 in Glace Bay and was the daughter of the late Ralph and Ellen (Johnson) Turner.
Edna was a Nurse’s Aide for many years at the Glace Bay General Hospital. She was a devoted member of Saint Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay, and served as the very first female warden of her church; however, her proudest role in life was that of being known as Mom and Nanny. She had a passion for watching her favorite TV shows, including watching Coronation Street with her late sister, Ellen, as well as having tea and night lunch with her family and friends over the years. She loved spending countless summers at Whale Cove in Margaree and taking many trips with her late husband Sonny across Canada and to see her favorite singers, Daniel O’Donnell and Rita McNeil. She was also a big fan of going for regular Sunday drives and those to see the Christmas lights, some of those in excess of an entire day, with both her kids and grandkids over the years.
Edna is survived by her sister, Janet House, Glace Bay, son David, Glace Bay, and daughters Darlene (Donnie) Glace Bay, and Sandra (Bernie), Halifax, and Debbie (Mark) Dupuis, Ontario; grandsons Taylor (Taylor) and Aaron (Sydney) Cameron, Halifax, David (Connie) and Brian Nearing, Glace Bay; granddaughters Tammy (Keith), Glace Bay, and MaryAnne (Arthur) Nearing, Halifax, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Nancy Duncan, Halifax, great-grandsons Austin, Ethan, Keaton, Brycen, Colby and Blake, great-granddaughter Carley and dear friend to daughter Darlene, Neila, all of Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, Edna is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Sonny Nearing, brothers, Frank and Ralph Turner, sister Ellen MacCormack, and two children in infancy, Janet and Timothy.
Visitation for Edna will be held at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay, on Friday, November 8th, 2024 from 4-8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 9th, 2024 at St. Mary’s Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay. A reception will follow in the church foyer. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
We would like to thank VON and New Waterford Homecare for their support and professionalism in Mom’s care over the past few years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edna’s memory to St. Mary’s Church, or a charity of choice.
