She was the daughter of the late Rodger Leonard of Motherwell, Scotland and Rebecca MacDonald of Dominion, NS.
After the birth of her second son Paul, Kay became his advocate and a champion for all persons with disabilities.
She was a founding member and former president of the Atlantic Cerebral Palsy Association and a long time Board Member of Brass Tack Industries in Glace Bay. She served for many years as Regional Coordinator for the United Way of Cape Breton.
Kay was a lifelong member of the Liberal Party of Canada, but held in high regard person of all stripes who were motivated to engage in the political process. Her commitment to public service saw her serve on Glace Bay Town Council from 1982 -1985, being the first women in the history of the town to be elected.
Family was at the core of Kay's Life; Every Sunday all converged in Nan’s Kitchen, most often being treated to a big roast, heavily garnished with politics, hockey and life's lessons. One of her great joys was following the hockey games of her kids and grand kids around the rinks of Nova Scotia. She was a season ticket holder at Center 200 since the Cape Breton Oilers first season.
She was survived by children, Darlene (Jim MacLean), Rodger (Lynn Hopkins), Charlie "Wedge" (Karen MacLeod), Kim Bedecki (Jerry), Brian "Boog" (Viola MacLeod). Sister Dolly Milberry Bridgewater, Norma MacEwan (Bob) Truro. Grandchildren Terry Brian, Matthew, Rebecca, Jeff, Leigh Anne, Tyler, Mitch, Scott, Brad, Brett, Wayne, and Great Grandchildren Avery Rose, and Arius.
She was Predeceased by Husband Trueman, Sons Paul and David in infancy.
Visitation will be held Friday August 3rd, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St Glace Bay. Funeral Service will take place Saturday at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Vernon Reid Officiating. Interment to follow in the Forest Haven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to CAPE adult service center Glace Bay, or to the charity of choice.
