Born August 26, 1939 – Passed March 31, 2025
Ruth Hamburg (née Schick) was born on August 26, 1939, in Morrill, Nebraska, to Rachel (Kraft) and Manual Schick Sr. She passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, at the age of 85.
A graveside gathering and burial took place on April 3, 2025, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Morrill, Nebraska, per her wishes.
Ruth spent most of her life in the Gering and Scottsbluff area. Alongside her siblings, she won awards for musical and theatrical performances in county choral groups and stage productions.
In the 1950s, Ruth lived in Falls Church, Virginia, with her older sister Rachel. Later, Ruth moved to Barstow, California, where she helped her aunt and uncle with the restoration of the Calico Ghost Town. She also enjoyed square dancing with the Hinkley High Steppers.
Eventually returning to the Gering area, Ruth met Dan Hamburg, a military veteran. The two were married in 1958 and shared a long, loving life together until Dan’s passing in August 2024.
Ruth pursued college studies in dietary science and nutrition and worked in local elementary schools, high schools, and care centers. While she was dedicated to her career, family always came first.
She will be remembered for her incredible cooking, generous spirit, sense of humor, memorable sayings and songs, and her deep love for birds, nature, flowers, and the God who created it all.
Ruth is survived by her sister Judy and brother Ed of Southern California; brother David of Iowa; daughter Diana; sons John and Jason of Colorado; and grandchildren Megan, Doc, Alyssa, Amanda, and Ryan, all of Colorado. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and in-laws across the country.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Lydia, Mary, Rachel, Rose, and Patti Jo; and brothers Fred, Manuel Jr., and Billie D.
A Celebration of Life honoring both Dan and Ruth Hamburg will be held in August 2025.
