Dorothy Lowery

Dorothy Wingard Lowery of Georgiana passed away February 1 surrounded by her daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Bessie Wingard, a sister Sue Lancaster, a brother Charles Wingard Jr., her husband Lee Jack Lowery and an infant daughter who died at birth.

Funeral services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday February 5, 2013 with the Rev. Randy Harvell officiating. Interment will follow at the Brushy Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born in the Brushy Creek community of Butler County on September 18, 1926. As did most school-age children in her community, she attended Brushy Creek School through the sixth grade, then entered Georgiana High School from which she was graduated in 1944. As a young girl she worked as a switchboard operator at the WT Smith Lumber Company in Chapman. She married the late Lee Jack Lowery following his return from service in the Marine Corps during World War II. After their wedding on Christmas Day 1946 she joined her husband, a farmer, on a lifelong journey during which she was always by his side providing continuous and loving support. She also graduated from Massey-Draughon Business College in Montgomery where she studied bookkeeping and accounting which she used maintaining the financial records for their farming operation. One thing that made her smile and for which she was most happy during the years after her children were grown and had left home was to see all of them back together with her at Christmas. As she often said, “like an old hen, I want all my biddies back home with me”. Now she’s made it back to her heavenly home where she will enjoy peace, comfort and joy, surrounded by the never-ending love of the Father.

Dorothy is survived by her son Keith Lowery (Peggy Reeves) Montgomery, AL and two daughters, Melinda Gardner (Randall) Southside, AL and Amelia Middleton Houston, TX, 5 grandchildren – Stephanie Ashley (Mark), Kim Mueller (Stephen) Amanda Woosley (Jesse), Greta Simmons (Chris), Shep Lowery (Mary Hayden Winn) and 5-great grandchildren - Will Ashley, Luke Ashley, Joseph Mueller, Libby Woosley, Eli Simmons.

The family wishes to acknowledge the tender mercy and kindness provided to our Mother by Rita Ward and Carolyn Willis during the last years of her life. Their deep commitment of love sustained her through many hard times and we will be forever grateful.
