Jim was born in the small hours of the morn in 1949 in Vicksburg, MS to Jim and Tressie Mangum. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in engineering, moved to Iowa after college and started a business. After living in Louisiana and Mississippi later, he moved his family to Texas in 1988. This was a dream come true for Jim as he considered the land of fierce independence and masterpiece sunsets to be most like his Father’s home in Heaven. The Lone Star State was where he put down new roots.
Jim Mangum was an opinionated and intelligent man. He was an avid reader, student of history, gunsmith, and loved to travel. From a young age, he realized he was a sojourner on this earth and that his heart would never find rest till it rested in the presence of the Lord. He was devoted to the belief that the chief end of Man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. And while waiting for the long tomorrow, he loved to talk and nothing thrilled him more than an impromptu debate, spending many evenings in lively conversations with friends and family. Jim was passionate about his family and had a special place in his heart for the dogs as well.
He is survived by his wife, Patty Dierenfeld Mangum of Round Rock, Texas; five children: Matthew Mangum and wife Michele of Pflugerville, Texas, Amanda Esquivel and husband Tommy of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Laura Moore and husband Michael of Bluffton, South Carolina, Deborah Bannan and husband Stuart of Palmer, Alaska, and Adriaan Mangum of San Marcos, Texas; ten grandchildren, Grace, Samantha, Caspian and Maewyn Esquivel, Noah and Micah Mangum, and Samuel, Evangeline, Anna and Abigail Moore; his mother, Tressie Mangum of Seminary, Mississippi and sister, Shirley Blacklidge and husband Randy of Gulfport, Mississippi, and their children.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Peterson and Shakespeare, Nurses Amanda and Valerie, and the rest of the ICU team at Scott & White in Temple for their wonderful care.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 31, from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Dr. in Georgetown, Texas. A graveside service will take place at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 1, at St. John's Cemetery, on FM1460 at CR111, officiated by longtime friend Chuck Barber. Both the visitation and the graveside service are open to any friends and family who wish to attend.
As we lay Jim into this bit of Lone Star soil under the big sky, we do not mourn like those who have no hope, for we know that by the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross to pay for our sins, this beloved husband, father, brother and son is in a far greater place. May he rest in peace and rise in glory on That Day.
Memorials may be made in honor of Jim Mangum Jr. to St. Jude's Hospital.
Arrangements under the direction of Cook-Walden Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628 (512) 863-2564.
