Jerry Ayres, 82, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 7, 2020, and is now with his heavenly Father. He was born on September 15, 1937 in Austin, Texas to Shelton and Mary (Digby) Ayres. Jerry was a loving husband and father. He was known as Pop to his multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his beloved dog, Missy Bella. His fishing buddies often referred to him as “Pesco Grande.”
He graduated from Austin High School and from there he entered in the Navy as a Fireman Apprentice. Afterwards he had several odd jobs until he found his passion in sales. He appreciated his long time career at Kruger’s Diamond Jewelers on 8th and Congress in downtown Austin. He took pride in treating every customer with integrity, which led to lifetime customer relationships and friends. He met his wife- to-be while she was looking at jewelry through the window at Krugers. He ran out after her and persuaded her to come inside and look at rings.
In his free time you would find him fishing, whether it was at the beach or at a fishing tank trying to land “the big one.” Besides being a natural salesman, he accepted and related to all walks of life, making many friends and entertaining them with his infamous stories and jokes. He really enjoyed his retirement years in Aransas Pass and being the founder of the “Old Farts” Poker Club. He will be missed greatly but remain in our hearts forever.
Jerry is preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Ayres Powell, son, Jerry Ayres, Jr., and grandson, Glen Laufenburger.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Patsy Ayres; daughters, Sherri Ayres Pickett and husband David Pickett, Lori Jean Ayres, Kimberly Ayres and Amy Ayres; grandchildren, Kameren Hodnett (considered as a son), Larissa Hernandez and husband Lupe Hernandez, Rebecca Laufenberger, Preston Patten and wife Taylor Patten, A.J. Ayres and wife Carole Ayres, Madisen Ayres, Wyatt Vera, Cash Vera and Athena McCreary; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Pat Ayres and wife JoAnn Ayres, Samuel Ellison and wife Darlene Ellison; sister, Emily Haire and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, 1117 E. 7th Street in Georgetown. Following the service a reception will be held at Grace Bible Church, 2100 Shell Road in Georgetown. For the service, family suggests wearing fishing shirts or casual attire to honor Jerry.
