George Edward (Ed) Mitchell, Sr. passed away peacefully July 6, 2017 at the age of 85. He spent winters in Sun City in Georgetown, Texas and summers in Thayne, Wyoming with his wife Bea. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, August 20, 1931 to John C Mitchell, Sr. and Sammie Lou Borders Mitchell. He was the youngest of 4 children. His siblings preceded him in death, John C. Mitchell, Jr., Lucy Cordilia Rush, and Eleanor Elysabeth Whitley.
Ed married his High School sweetheart, Joyce Rayetta Miles, in 1950. From this union Cynthia (Cyndi) Ayn, George Edward (Ed) Jr. and John Radford were born. They were married 58 years before she preceded him in death in 2007. Ed then married Bea Latham of Thayne, Wyoming in 2009.
Ed served in the United States Navy, joining in 1951. He was a Korean War veteran with combat duty in Okinawa. After serving in the Navy, he began college at Newark College of Engineering, earning his Masters in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by ITT as an engineer, retiring in 1994 with the title of Managing Director of Engineering of ITT Avionics Division in San Diego.
Besides spending time with family and friends, his favorite past-time was golf. While living on the 6th tee box on Star Valley Country Club, he enjoyed playing countless rounds---placing second in their annual tournament.
Survivors are: wife, Bea Mitchell of Georgetown, Texas; children, Cyndi Bradbury of Austin, Texas, Ed and wife, Carol Mitchell of Leander, Texas, John and wife, Cheryl Mitchell of Menifee, California; step-children, Greg Latham and Charles and Vivian Latham all of Salt Lake City, Utah; 9 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 10 step great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Memorial Services for George Edward (Ed) Mitchell, Sr. will be held at Cook Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas on Monday, July 17, 2017 at 11:00 A.M.
