Born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 4, 1928, Bill was the son of the late Clara Stack Goebel and Alfred W. Goebel.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Jean Marie Liederbach Goebel of the home; son, Peter Goebel of Midland, son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Penny Goebel of Tega Cay; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ed Robinson of Matthews; sister, Mary Lou Bregitzer of Mayfield Heights, Ohio; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Edwina Fox Goebel, his sister, Marilyn Schwark and brother, James Goebel.
Bill graduated from Cathedral Latin High School, making life-long friends in his fraternity, Atrix, and attended John Carroll University, both in Cleveland. His career with computers, called office machines at that time, started with Nickel Plate Railroad. He later joined Clark Control, which was later absorbed by A.O. Smith. Bill accepted a promotion to a new manufacturing facility with the company in Lancaster, SC. He and his family moved south in 1964, leaving many family and friends behind in the Cleveland area; but, it wasn’t long before new friends and relationships were made, and the family became active in St. Catherine Catholic Church. Bill also served the Lancaster community through several service organizations, including the Lancaster Lions Club and the local Moose Club. He later worked for several other corporations, moved to Gastonia, NC in 1981, and retired from Gaston County Government in 1993. Along with his wife, Bill was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, and participated when able after his major stroke struck in 1999.
Bill’s life was full of family and friends. He loved being with his grand and great grandchildren, working in his well-kept yard, building projects of all kinds and fishing with his buddies.
The family wishes to publicly thank the nurses and staff of Gaston Hospice Services and Home Instead for their loving care during this unsettled time.
A memorial service will be held in the Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia at 3:00 pm Friday. Deacon Jack Weisenhorn will lead our prayers and memories. Visitation will be 2:00 to 3:00 pm prior to the service. Light refreshments with the family will be served after the service.
Instead of flowers, and to honor Bill, a memorial in his name is suggested to St Michael Catholic Church Building Fund, Gaston Hospice Services, or to a charity of one’s choice.
