Phyllis (Revels Crawford) Raines, 75, of Gastonia passed away suddenly on Wednesday evening April 26, 2023. Phyllis is a native of Gaston County. Her family remembers that she always reminded them of special occasions such as birthdays and Mother’s Day. Phyllis was the true matriarch of her family keeping up with her kids and grandkids. Phyllis loved to travel and she went many places with her cousin, Beverly. She went on two cruises to the Bahamas including stops in Nassau and Half-Moon Bay. She loved to cook and she was planning to make some Banana Bread right before she passed. She made jewelry and she loved her little “grand-dog,” Zoe, a Jack Russell Terrier. Phyllis was a very hard worker. She often worked 12 and 16-hour days in a textile mill to support her family. In her later years, she was a cashier at Dillard’s and Food Lion where she never met a stranger and she would talk to everyone. Even when she retired for good, she kept in contract with some of her customers. Even in her death, she was committed to helping others by donating her skin to help burn victims. Phyllis made a great impact on many and she will be dearly missed by her family, friends, customers, neighbors and all that knew and loved her.
Phyllis is the daughter of the late Louise Elizabeth (Brandon) Revels and Lloyd James Revels. Two husbands preceded her in death – Frederick Crawford, Jr. and Richard Raines. She also has a grandchild awaiting her in heaven. Her brother, Gary Revels, has also preceded her in death.
Left to cherish their memories of their mother and to carry on her legacy are her daughters, Dana (Crawford) Blackmon and her significant other Gerald Puzzetti, Lynn (Crawford) Astin and Stacie (Crawford) Wilkie and her husband Richard and her sons, James Crawford, John Crawford and Scott Crawford. She also leaves behind her sister, Linda Barnett and her husband Ronnie and brother Michael Revels. 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild are also survivors.
The family will receive friends form 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday evening May 4, 2023 at Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia, North Carolina.
The funeral service, celebrating her life, will be at 2:00 pm on Friday May 5, 2023 at Carothers Funeral Home. Burial will follow the celebration of life service in the Hillside Garden at Gaston Memorial Park. Reverend Mike Chriswell will officiate and offer words of encouragement and hope to family and friends that gather to remember Phyllis. Justin Revels, Rick Raines, Bradley Blackmon, Andrew Wilkie, Dustin Wilkie and Caleb Crawford are her pallbearers.
