Kathryn “Katy” (Bivens) Vining, 79, of Gastonia passed away Tuesday August 30, 2022 at Atrium’s Main Campus in Charlotte. Katy was a devoted wife and mother. She was a registered nurse by training, but she was mostly a stay at home mom. She earned a Bachelor’s in Nursing when it was not common to have a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Katy studied at both West Virginia University and The University of Virginia. Katy enjoyed bowling and was active in a bowling league for a number of years. She also enjoyed playing slot machines, birdwatching, watching game shows and caring for her cats and other family pets. Many will miss Katy.
Katy leaves behind her husband of 54 years, Owen (Dick) Vining. She also leaves behind her children Richard Vining and his wife Carmen and Carrie Duran and her husband Anthony. Her grandchildren Laure Lee Duran, Davis Vining and Palmer Vining are missing their grandmother. Her brother Dr. Robert Bivens and his wife Margaret are also grieving. Katy also leaves behind her half-sister, Laura Bivens, a half-brother, Frank Bivens and a niece, Beth Bivens. Katy grew up close to many of her cousins and those that survive are missing Katy too.
The family will receive friends at from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Monday September 5, 2022 at Carothers Funeral Home, 205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia. Immediately following the visitation there will be a graveside service in The Garden of Peace at Gaston Memorial Park. Reverend Dawn Flynn will officiate and offer words of encouragement and hope to family and friends that gather to remember Katy.
