

Mr. James Richard Cunningham, 87, of Gastonia, NC died December 1, 2017 at Catawba Regional Hospice House in Newton. Son of the late Paul Glen and Okie Smith Cunningham, husband of the late Alveda Seymour Cunningham, grandfather of the late Jeffrey Scott Jr. and Angel Marie Cunningham, brother of the late Cecil C., John D., Roy L., Paul G. and Samuel D. Cunningham, he was born June 23, 1930 in Gaston County. A member of the Baptist Faith, Mr. Cunningham worked with A.B. Carter, Inc., Sheltex and Lundy’s. He served in the United States Army and also was an avid tennis player holding membership in the Gaston, Charlotte and also in the Super Senior League in Charlotte.
A celebration of Mr. Cunningham’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 9, 2017 conducted by Pastor Steve Weaver and eulogy by Pastor Ricky Bracket in the Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM – 12:50 PM prior to the service at Carothers Funeral Home.
Survivors include five sons, Jimmy Cunningham (Lisa) of Charlotte, Larry Cunningham (Suzanne) of Hickory, Gary Cunningham (Donna) of Grover, Scott Cunningham (Beth) of Gastonia, Michael Cunningham (Laurie) of Rock Hill, SC, two daughters, Linda Cunningham of Gastonia, and Cindy Griggs (Jim) of Clover, SC; three brothers, Franklin Eugene Cunningham (Nancy) and Dwight Wayne Cunningham (Sue) of San Antonio, TX, Earl Cunningham of Arizona; three sisters, Okie Kay Kirby of Lake Norman, Frances Givens (Ray) of Mt. Holly and Martha Sue Cunningham of Charlotte; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations to the local Salvation Army will be appreciated.
