Hilda, affectionately called Mama and Granny. Hilda May Bloss was born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, on July 28, 1927. Her parents Robert Bingaman and Ella (Patterson) Bingaman raised her on their farm. Her father also worked in a factory. Her mom never worked outside the home but husked corn and picked berries. Hilda helped pick berries for sale and for making pies. They also dug sassafras roots for farmers to help the family earn a living. To further supplement their income, her mom got bitter sweets and sold them in bunches at Christmas time. Hilda’s job was to help her mom in all the selling process. As an only child, at the age of twelve she refused to “peddle stuff,” as she called it, because it was embarrassing. Her mom sold arbutus flowers at Easter, which went like hot cakes – so Hilda said.
Hilda was married to Norman Elwood Bloss on December 24, 1949. Norman was a bi-vocational pastor in Ohio and Indiana. They moved the family to Houston, Texas where they celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary in 1974. Norman passed from this life on May 29, 1975. Shortly after his homegoing, Hilda sold their mobile home in New Caney, TX and moved to New Castle, PA, where Van and Jane were pastors. She had never driven a car, but on her husband’s passing she got in that Grand Marquis and began driving. Mom stayed in New Castle for a couple of years. Hilda’s life was one of adventure from New Castle forward. She and her dear friend Mary Mizenko, (like a daughter) have traveled and lived in numerous places on the east coast until finally settling in Gastonia, North Carolina in 2009. Due to her physical inability to remain at home, on May 10, 2023, she was received and cared for as a rehab patient at Accordius Health in Gastonia. Hilda went to her “Eternal Home” May 22, 2023
She is loved and remembered by her six children Vanuel Lee Bloss (Jane), Norma Jean Bloss, Varzelo Ann Waterfield (George), Ujeania Itteen Leutwyler (Dean), Giltner Joe Bloss, and Rolanda Kay Edwards (Wayne).
