Born in Queens, NY, Edward was the son of the late Edward Frederick and Viola Hoerning.
The Hoerning family eventually settled in Athens, NY. Edward met his wife of 56 years, the late Carol Swezey Hoerning, while attending Coxsackie-Athens High School. In addition to Carol, Edward was preceded in death by his son, Robert P. Hoerning and his daughter, Nancy C. Brown.
Edward graduated in 1963 from Cornell University after which he took a job with the USDA. There his career in poultry science lasted for 42 years and led him to live and work in Suffern, NY, Mickelton, NJ, and ultimately Gastonia, NC, where he retired in 2005. Edward and Carol were faithful members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. Edward is survived by a son, Thomas Hoerning, and wife Ann of Charlotte, NC; son-in-law, Keith J. Brown of Pittsboro, NC; son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Paul and Jennifer Hoerning Baxley of Athens, GA; grandchildren Laura Hoerning Randolph and husband, Jack; Olivia Hoerning Baxley; Maria, Caroline, and Matthew Baxley; brother, Eugene Hoerning and wife, Elizabeth of Catskill, NY and sister, Ann Hoerning Withjack and husband, Noel of Athens, NY.
A memorial service to celebrate Edward’s life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 13, 2024 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Gastonia, NC.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, that remembrances be made in the form of contributions to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Gastonia, NC.
