Myrtle “Delores” (Herrick) Sensing, 84, of Gastonia, known by most as “Dee,” went to be home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday June 22, 2024. Delores was born in Fairburn, Fulton County, Georgia on January 20, 1940. She was one of 13 children. She grew up in Georgia where she met her late husband, “Gene,” at the tender age of 15. In 1956, just two years later, they got married. They had six children together and later moved their family to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1970. They were married a few month shy of 50 years. After Gene passed in 2006, Dee moved to Gastonia, North Carolina. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Delores worked a few odd jobs during her lifetime including The Merita Bakery in Atlanta Georgia, then after moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, she worked at Rub-A-Dub Laundry as well as The Coin Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Charlotte, and later worked at Press Town Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Belmont, North Carolina.
Some of Delores’ hobbies and interest included collecting porcelain dolls, Emmitt Kelly clown figurines and paintings, as well as Willow Angel figurines. In her down time she liked doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed cooking for he loved ones and she made the very best homemade biscuits that you’ve ever had. Her favorite music was Gospel and Country. She loved to listen to Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty and The Gaithers. Roses were her favorite flower, and she also loved orchids. She really enjoyed birdwatching, but Cardinals, or “red birds” were truly her favorite. She loved Jesus, reading her Bible and attending church on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. She delighted in the simple things and her greatest pleasure in life was doing for others.
She was truly an Angel her on earth, with a heart of gold. Her love for all had no bounds, and she accepted everyone no matter their faults or flaws.
Delores had such a sweet, kind and loving nature. She was known and adored for her generosity and willingness to help others, by lending a helping hand, expecting nothing in return. She opened her home, no matter how small, taking in so many loved ones over the years that were in need or down on their luck. Her family meant everything to her, but her grandchildren were definitely her pride and joy! Grandmaw was the epitome of unconditional love. She was the matriarch and backbone of our family. Her strength was unmatched, despite the numerous challenges she faced. She overcame them with such grace.
Delores is preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Mae (Crews) Herrick and her father, Clyde L. Herrick. Her husband, Eugene “Gene” Story Sensing and her sons, Kenneth Blake Sensing, Joseph Eugene Sensing and Donald Neal Sensing have all gone on before her. Her sisters, Carolyn Herrick, Charlotte Herrick and Glenda Herrick and brothers, Bobby Herrick, Ricky Herrick, Thomas “Bug” Herrick, Henry Herrick, Robert Herrick and a special friend, Frank Berkley have also predeceased her.
Her daughters, Peggy (Sensing) Griggs and her husband Cliff and Sharon Renea Sensing and son, William “Bo” Sensing and his wife Sandra survive Delores. Missing their Grandmaw are her grandchildren, Shane Sensing, Greg Sensing, Audra Sensing, Ashley (Griggs) Brown and her husband Kelly, Justin Griggs, Dylan Sensing and his wife Carly, Paul Wright and his wife Aleisa, Travis Wright and his wife Terran and Sharon Wright. Dolores’ legacy includes 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Her sisters, Grace (Herrick) Lambert and Jennie (Herrick) Scarborough and brothers Ronald Herrick and his wife Robin and Norman Herrick also remain here. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and friends.
A service remembering Delores and celebrating her life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday June 29, 2024 at Carothers Funeral Home, 2205 Williamsburg Drive, Gastonia, North Carolina. The family will gather and receive friends one hour before the service, beginning at 2:00 pm, at the funeral home. Her pastor, Reverend Dr. Robin Harris will officiate offering words of encouragement, comfort and hope to family and friends that gather to remember Delores.
