When someone you love becomes a memory… That memory becomes a Treasure…. Allen James Schock, age 90 passed away at his home and went to be with his wife and his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 8, 2017. Allen’s family described him as a great and giving Father in addition to being a wonderful husband, grandfather and great grandfather. “Dad had many loves in his life;” his wife Helen of 65 years who passed away in 2013, his family and his career as the VP of Rates at Public Service Gas Company. In his day he was an avid golfer and sports fan. With his accounting background he was a numbers guy. Closely following the Atlanta Braves and knowing the stats of each player was one of his passions.
A friend of Allen’s has a beautiful pecan grove and he would shell bushels at a time, extract the pecans and then return them to his friend. Allen enjoyed making his famous homemade trail mix that he called “trash”. He loved giving his neighbors and family “trash” for their enjoyment. Allen and Helen loved to travel. Their favorite destinations always involved entertainment and good food. They loved Cherokee Casino along with casinos in Biloxi, Tupelo and Las Vegas. Allen loved his bus trips to Cherokee and the many friends he made over the years traveling to and from. He knew all of the bartenders by their first name and claimed to be an “excellent tipper.”
Allen and Helen loved Hilton Head Island where he and family vacationed for 30+ years and stayed at their condo. He knew all of the best crabbing spots on the island. Allen served his country honorably during WWII in the United States Navy. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Those left to cherish his memories and carry on his legacy are his two daughters and sons in law: Susan and Richard Cole of Raleigh, North Carolina; Karen and Ken Whitley of Morganton, North Carolina; four grandchildren: Jeffrey Cole and girlfriend Emma Jackson, Jennifer and Jacob Tolley, Ryan and Courtney Whitley, Meredith and Mark Schwartz; three great grandchildren: Hattie, Parker and Libby; very special friends: Jimmy, Nancy, Sara, Jim and Jamie.
