Mellody Rashaunn Haynes was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, niece, favorite cousin, and friend. She was an esteemed member of the Tuskegee Alumni community and an active member of the Alabaster community. Mellody broke the mold with her wit, unwavering strength, and fierce loyalty. She departed this life on August 29, 2023.
Mellody Haynes was the daughter of Arnold Haynes, Dorinda Jones Patterson, and Jonas Patterson. Her love for her family knew no bounds. She was a role model for her children, reminding them of the importance of family, perseverance, and faith. Mellody leaves behind two devoted sons, Carion Willis Neal (Rita), Christian Alexander Neal, and one beloved granddaughter, Delaney Bryant Neal. She is also survived by two sisters, Hope Pearson (Drew) and Cindy Kenley-Betts (William), one brother, Arnold "Al" Haynes Jr., and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She leaves one special friend, Mike Gould, who was always by her side. She enriched the lives of all who knew her.
Mellody’s devotion to her family was most evident in her role as grandmother. Affectionately known as Migi, Mellody adored spending time with her only grandchild. Delaney Neal was the undisputed apple of her eye, bringing immeasurable joy and laughter into her life. No sacrifice was too large when it came to showering her granddaughter with love, affection, and wisdom.
Mellody's academic journey began at Clinton High School, where she excelled in academics. Graduating in 1987, Mellody went on to pursue undergraduate studies at Hinds Community College, Tougaloo College, and ultimately, her beloved alma mater, Tuskegee University. At Tuskegee, Mellody honed her talents, made friends who became family, and charted her path towards making a difference in the world. She later obtained a master’s degree in health sciences administration from Mississippi College. A champion for education, Mellody went on to inspire many young people to attend Tuskegee University and become world-changers. She relished any opportunity to share the countless reasons Tuskegee University is the best college in the nation. Mellody was a proud member of the Shelby County Birmingham Tuskegee Alumni Chapter and served as the president from 2021-2022.
Throughout her professional career, Mellody touched many lives through her work. She first made her mark in the field of social work, where she demonstrated her passion for helping the most underserved communities. Mellody spent the next 15 years as an administrator for non-profit organizations. During her service with non-profits, she gained recognition for her impressive leadership skills and grant-writing abilities. Ever the entrepreneur, Mellody established several non-profit organizations. In 2019, Mellody established Haynes Mobile Notary and Wedding Services, which was a true labor of love. Through her service, she gave the utmost care and attention to detail, ensuring that the start of every couple's journey was nothing short of magical.
In April of 2000, Mellody became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. For 23 years, she generously dedicated her time and expertise to serving the community. Embodying service to all mankind, Mellody would serve and support chapter initiatives without hesitation. Her life’s work and organization affiliations reflect her staunch commitment to advocacy, loyalty, community, and servant leadership.
Mellody lived life on purpose. In 2010, when she faced a formidable diagnosis of breast cancer, she declared with conviction she would not go down without a fight. She summoned a warrior spirit from within, just as her mother and grandmother before her did, and she fought the fight of her life. Throughout her lengthy illness, Mellody never allowed it to define her. Her infallible courage and determination inspired all who had the privilege to witness her amazingly resilient spirit.
Mellody inspired and encouraged many others in their own, personal journeys. Through all she endured, Mellody lived life on purpose. Earning her the nickname "Highway Jones," she would often get on the highway after receiving chemotherapy. Mellody was well-known to travel for those she loved. She was always ready to attend the many graduations, weddings, funerals, cruises, concerts, family reunions, and Tuskegee Homecoming festivities to celebrate with family and friends. Her people meant the world to her. For this reason, she fought hard...and she loved even harder.
Mellody Haynes has left an indelible mark on the lives she touched. Her vibrant spirit and passion for life will be missed beyond measure. As we bid her farewell, we celebrate her life and the incredible impact she made. May her memory serve as a reminder to embrace life with tenacity, gratitude, and love. May we forever honor her memory by living on purpose.
